Billboard Wars Over Lawtey As A "Speed Trap"
In veiwing all of these complaints, I would suggest comments be sent to the police major in Lawtey as well as the local newspaper. An email address link is available on www.lawtey-fl.com. The route of US 301 through Lawtey itself goes from 65, to 55, to 45. Its a gradual process, thus no accidents have occured, as normal drivers do not have to slam on their brakes. Accidents in Lawtey are quite rare. (Mar 27, 2009 | post #74)
Billboard Wars Over Lawtey As A "Speed Trap"
I do live in the general area of Lawtey, but am not on the PD. I only comment due to my travels between Jacksonville and Starke, I frequently pass through Lawtey. What I see happen most often are people heading southbound on 301 not bothering to slow down. I can understand the frustrations of unfair ticketing, but the ones I do see pulled over during my trips deserve it as they fly by me at a high rate of speed, even though they passed a billboard with the warning, PLUS the decrease in speed limit signs. Billboard Wars Over Lawtey As A "Speed Trap"
As a notice to those complaining about driving through Lawtey and getting a ticket. I frequently drive US 301 through Lawtey as I go to Jacksonville often. I feel the ticketing is quite fair. #1 There are billboards posted WARNING people about the 'strict' speed enforcement in Lawtey, as well as Waldo further south. #2 I am frequently upset at the MANY vehicles that continue to speed by me as I am slowing down according to the posted speed limit signs. According to Anita's comment, her son was given a ticket for an expired tag. If the tag was not in fact expired, then I suggest she contact her local license office as well as the Bradford County courthouse. Provide documentation proving the tag was up-todate! Tag info is run through a computer system, so if it came up as expired it either was or there was a computer error! As for those that complain about getting tickets for no reason, the city limit begins at the 45 MPH zone, so if you were going 60 mph, then DUH... you deserve the ticket. It amazes me about all of the complaints posted, claiming about being "trapped " by the Lawtey PD and given tickets unfairly. As I mentioned above, upon my many trips back from Jacksonville, I am constantly passed by other motorists who choose to ignore the billboards and posted speed limit signs. If you do not speed, you will not be ticketed. (Jan 4, 2009 | post #53)
Billboard Wars Over Lawtey As A "Speed Trap"
The City of Lawtey will not stop you for going the speed limit. Everyone who is whining about this had to have been speeding. I travel through Lawtey frequently, I even travel through Waldo freuently (the other 'speedtrap per AAA'). I average around 45-48 mph and never have a problem. What gets me is I am always passed by several vehicles that are clearly going in excess over the posted speed limit. Yet, those would be the first ones to complain about getting a ticket. Anyone with a complaint can contact the LAwtey PD by visiting www.lawtey-fl.com/ policedept. There is no 'trap' as there are billboards on both ends of town and the cops do not target people as it has been said. You speed, you get stopped adn you get a ticket. (Sep 18, 2008 | post #24)
Billboard Wars Over Lawtey As A "Speed Trap"
Lawtey is not a speed trap. Mainly those who have been stopped call it that. The speed limits are clearly posted. With a school campus right next to US 301, the LPD is strict with those that choose to violate the posted speed limits. You can travel through this town safely a few miles above 45 mph, which is the limit through town, yet I always observes many, many others flying through without a care. Then they always cry foul when they are stopped and ticketed. I am a member of AAA myself, and I critize them frequently for their choice in declaring a speed trap. If the people will not speed, then they will not get a ticket, it is just plain and simple. (Mar 25, 2008 | post #4)
The City of Lawtey will be hosting the 4th annual Trail Ridge Festival on March 1 & 2, 2008. Last years festival turned out nicely and drew in decent crowds. The event is a family themed one with activites for everyone. (Feb 20, 2008 | post #1)
