Gulch is OK. Thanks for your concern. My satellite internet went kaput. Had to go to Capitan and use someones wi-fi to send a few messages.. At least we made it through the worst of the emergency. Good luck to everyone... If you are still waiting to find out about your property, relatives or friends in the area, I hope everyone hears nothing but good news. Gulch Out. (Jun 12, 2012 | post #379)
Just heard from a friend on Peebles Ranch Road, Just east of 48, and just south of 220. Their place is OK, although says the fire came within 200 yards. (Jun 11, 2012 | post #308)
I just heard on the scanner that two places across from Bonita Lou's still stand. He said he thought the shed to one was gone but two dwellings are OK.. Folks, I'd like to be able to go and check everyone's houses, and friends /relatives houses for you, but I've no authority to talk my way past roadblocks and I don't want to make them mad or hinder their work by trying to sneak in. So the best I can do is report specifics I hear over the radio waves. It does sound so far this morning that things are a lot calmer out there in the zones where the police and Sheriff's are. There is just an occasional light breeze here at 'the gulch', and lots of blue sky , with the occasional streak of smoke, and some 'real' clouds mixed in. Maybe we will be blessed with some rain?!?!?! I don't want to raise any false hopes in that respect, but it seems like at least a slight possibility. (Jun 11, 2012 | post #284)
Most likely that last photo I posted ended just east of the point you were talking about, rather than closer to the Crest Trail as I thought at the time. I agree that would be a shame to lose that area. Between Tanbark Canyon where the Crow , Renowned and Parsons mines were, and over the hill into Nogal Canyon. My favorite place in the whole state of NM. I wanted to put my Hideout in Tanbark, but couldn't afford the property, and had to 'settle' for the Capitans.. Guess in this respect, I was lucky to be poor. There is a little grove on the south slope of the Peak that you can see just after you come over the ridge, that is absolutely stunning for a few days during the fall: I don't have the photo of it on this computer or on my server, but here is a small one I have at cafepress: http://www.cafepre ss.com/southwestph oto.90525404 OK, Now I'm really out of here for the night. And here is a good closeup of the ridge north of Bonito, a little farther west from the previous, close to the crest trail. http://www.az123.c om/fire/f11.jpg I hope that I was able to give everyone a good grasp of what the fire looked like from the northeast and north side, between 2PM & 4PPM Sunday. Good luck to all. Gulch Out. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #268)
Crud, the link to the last one was supposed to be: http://www.az123.c om/fire/f9.jpg And even closer, here are those big places on the ridge south of Nogal, just west of hwy 37: http://www.az123.c om/fire/f10.jpg. Getting tired. One more photo, and I'm utta here for tonight. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #267)
Here is a closer look at the ridge between Bonito Canyon to the South, and Nogal Canyon, with 37 running up the center of the view: http://www.az123.c om/fire/f8.jpg (Jun 10, 2012 | post #266)
This also from Indian Divide. Monjeau on the right. Those bare patches in the trees in the midground are the switchbacks of Road 37 up the hill south of Nogal. http://www.az123.c om/fire/f8.jpg I'd say that the north edge of the heavy smoke east of 37 is about following Magado Creek. Note, that this photo was taken at about 3:30 PM Sunday, just as the inversion layer was starting to push the smoke down to ground level. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #264)
Here is the link to hear it via Internet. http://www.live365 .com/stations/kedu ?play=2 I tuned in several times today and only heard music... But at this very moment Harvey T and someone else are talking about the fire. And the preliminary alert for the areas mentioned above. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #262)
This one is also from Indian Divide, a wider view. The lime green dot on the right side is the south east slope of Nogal Peak. The lime green dot at the left side, is Monjeau Peak , which you can barely see the outline, due to smoke coming up from Bonito Canyon. http://www.az123.c om/fire/f7.jpg As you go from the Nogal Peak dot , to the left, you can see the ridge where the crest Trail goes along towards Sierra Blanca, then see where there is smoke coming up from the West side of the mountain, then some more south until you hit the heavy smoke on the east side, above Bonito Canyon (I forgot the name of that little peak there, and I don't have my good map handy.).. Then on along that same ridge between Bonito and Nogal canyons that was better seen in the previous photo. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #260)
Hmm, I don't see an 'embarrassed' icon amongst the Judge it ones. Have to settle for this: http://www.az123.c om/smilies/embaras s.gif (Jun 10, 2012 | post #258)
Hey, Thanks Rio Rancho! Just heard that one of their Fire Engines has arrived to help. Oh, and I met some nice police officers from Alamogordo / Otero County just outside of Ft. Stanton yesterday. Thanks to them for coming to help too. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #252)
I'm working on the photos from the camera with the longer zoom on it now. Here is one from somewhere near the top of Indian Divide on 380 between Capitan and Carrizozo, looking south, at the east slope of Sierra Blanca. The ridge at the middle distance is the ridge between Bonito Canyon and Nogal Canyon, West of Highway 37, not quite to where it would intersect with the Crest Trail. http://www.az123.c om/fire/f6.jpg (Jun 10, 2012 | post #250)
Well, thanks, but I'm hardly a hero. The guys on the firelines might deserve that designation. I'm just trying to be a 'citizen journalist'; a 'junior Breitbart' if you will permit. since our real ones don't seem to want the job this weekend. And A slow one at that. I still have another camera with photos from today that I haven't sorted through. (Jun 10, 2012 | post #245)
