State cuts crimp private schools
Because people who send their kids to religious schools lobbied the legislature to subsidize them. The argument was that they're paying school taxes but not sending their kids to public schools. The legislature threw them a bone and said: "uh, okay we'll buy some books" and that became law. Now they've got to change the law or follow it. (21 hrs ago | post #9)

I imagine the food banks who receive the donations pay to process the meat. It's probably still cheaper than buying fresh meat. (22 hrs ago | post #6)

2 local congressmen not after 'pork' funds
Rather than point out who's taking earmarks and who isn't, why not look at what the earmarks do and see if they benefit the local economy? Kilroy is my representative and as long as she's fighting to ensure that my district gets it's fair share of my federal taxes back, I'm okay. Kilroy does not have very much senority so I don't imagine she has power to compete too seriously with pork barrlers from places like Alaska or West Virginia or guys like John Murtha who have been stealing our tax dollars for years . Stream guardians' jobs at risk
The point of the story is to inform people that the state is spending less money on stream clean-ups. You can use this information to contact your elected representatives and tell them either "yes this is good, thanks" or "no, please don't cut the program." (Yesterday | post #7)
Hilliard's definition of 'open space' spurs Big Darby debate
I agree with Mr. Sasson. EIther you want to protect the land or you want to develop more of it. You can't do both at this point. A watershed needs a certain minimum amount of undeveloped land to keep water quality high. People need to make up their minds and not try to say one thing and do another. If they want development then just say so. Don't mislead peopl by saying we can develop things and improve water quality at the same time. Can't happen. (Yesterday | post #2)
