Man with rifle arrested in store parking lot

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE At 6:00 this morning, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a parking lot on the 1600 block of Central Avenue in McKinleyville after receiving reports of gunfire at that location. Responding deputies found a man holding a rifle. As deputies approached, the man, Clarence Clarke, 76 and transient, appeared to level his rifle at the deputies. Using their public address system, the deputies instructed the Clarke to put the rifle down; he complied. The deputies were able to approach Clarke safely and detain him. A witness reported that prior to law enforcement’s arrival, Clarke pointed his rifle at him. Additional witnesses reported that Clarke had fired his rifle once, into the air, while standing in the parking lot. Clarke was arrested and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was booked for exhibiting a firearm and the negligent discharge of a firearm. His bail was set at $20,000 and he is expected to be arraigned by Thursday. No injuries were reported. Gary Philp Sheriff  (Nov 11, 2009 | post #18)

No tsunami expected on West Coast from sea quake

LA beaches will be cleared amid tsunami advisory Eds: APNewsNow. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lifeguards say they will clear Los Angeles County beaches around 8 p.m. in response to a tsunami advisory for possible dangerous currents following a magnitude-8 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa. Officials say they don’t believe coastal regions will suffer much damage, but some beaches could see higher-than-usual tides beginning at about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Los Angeles County Lifeguard Capt. Terry Harvey says personnel are on standby to move all county beach vehicles to higher ground if needed. He says several bay watch rescue vessels have been deployed and are looking for any changes in conditions at sea. Curt Kaplan of the National Weather Service in Oxnard says the seismic activity could bring waves a foot higher than normal. ——— Information from: Los Angeles Times, http://www.latimes .com  (Sep 29, 2009 | post #15)

Officials: 9 sick from Calif. beef problem

No brand given CONSUMERS WARNED NOT TO EAT GROUND BEEF PRODUCED BY BEEF PACKERS, INC. SACRAMENTO – Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today warned Californians not to eat certain brands of ground beef because the products could be contaminated with Salmonella newport, a potentially harmful bacterium. This particular strain of Salmonella is resistant to many commonly prescribed drugs, which can increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals. More than 825,000 pounds of product have been recalled by the manufacturer, Beef Packers, Inc. of Fresno. To date, there are 40 cases in nine states. California has reported five cases, three from Orange County and two from Tulare County. Beef Packers, Inc., is voluntarily recalling ground beef products produced on various dates ranging from June 5, 2009, through June 23, 2009. Beef products were distributed to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah. Because these products were repackaged into consumer-size packages and sold under different retail brand names, consumers should check with their local retailer to determine whether they may have purchased any of the products. Consumers should also check in their refrigerators and freezers and either dispose of the product or return it where it was purchased. “Young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, are susceptible to serious infection when exposed to Salmonella," Horton said. "Today’s warning is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of foods sold in California." Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Consumers who have eaten this product and are experiencing these symptoms should immediately consult their health care provider. Consumers with questions should contact Beef Packers, Inc. at (877) 872-3635. To access California’s distribution list click on Recall Beef Backers, Inc. ground beef products. Greg Olsen replaces Desmond Clark as Bears' starting tight end

Classy story about a classy dude, Haugh. Dez could start for at least half the other teams in the NFL and (I'm not sure what his contract is like) he may get that chance next year. It's moves like these that are giving the Bears some real depth this year (aside from QB, WR and safety, of course). On paper, the Bears may have what it takes. On the field, we'll see.  (Aug 3, 2009 | post #2)

Hard Truth Soldiers Tour

The paper did contact The Works and the info relayed from them was Talib was playing the show, as did other sources involved with the show. Note the news release being referred to is dated today, after the paper had gone to print. Info about the show — which may still be on — and who will be playing is still developing. We'll post more info as it becomes available.  (Apr 30, 2009 | post #24)
