At 85 murders as of 2008/09/16 we are currently on schedule to reach 120 murders by the end of the year. That is 22 more than last year and a 22.4% increase. Given an estimated Orlando/OC pop. or 1,043,500 persons, the murder rate of 120 per 1,043,500 would be 11.5, well below 'New Jack City'. Maybe the rate would be higher if you only considerd Orlando? In the Orlando/OC, as long as you pay your dealer and stay the heck out of Crime Hills after dark, your chances of being murderd are much less then dying in an automobile accident. I'm glad you say you won't hurt others, but please realise that being religious is simply not a garauntee non violence, and many would argue it has been the impetus for greatest amount of carnage on this planet. There are vast numbers of people in this world that do not harm others, and do not need the threat of a mystic hell in the afterlife to scare them into being rational humans. An officer of the law should not read these forums looking for words of praise. Generally, people are only going to take the time to comment when they are angry and feel someone has done wrong. I dare say that few (myself included) would do your job for less than 100k/yr. Fact is, the police are a group of individuals, and in any group you have heros and those who just can't cope with the job. As the I.Q. of the nation continues to decline, and the economic stresses continues to climb, there are natually going to be more D.U.I.'s. Being a cop is the most stressful job on the planet, save fighting a war in Iraq. Alcohol has become the number one antidote for stess in this country. Sure the officer must have known better, but something happens to the human brain after the fourth or sixth drink. A kind of bio chemical change where proper judgment just goes out the window. This incident says more about the lack of proper support of the officers in Polk county by the department, than it does about the individual officers conduct in general. There has to be more classes about stress management given by the department for the officers. This officer's carreer is ruined, and it didn't have to be, if he had more support from the Polk county sherriffs department? We 'Cabbies' in Orlando don't make a living 'hacking'. That is "One who undertakes unpleasant or distasteful tasks for money or reward; a hireling. A taxicab. We make a living saving lives. 40k die every year, half of which is due to alcohol. We Orlandonean Road Warriors are a cut above. We provide an honest service for an honest pay. Those that seek to earn a 'lawyers wages' in a night are much like lawyers in that they seek the unearned. If someone who is breaking the law screams that the law is unfair, do you first punish those that obey the law, or do examine first their claim of unfairness? Is it unafair that felons are disallowed to drive a cab wherein they are likely to pick up folks that are 'three sheets to the wind' and unable to defend themselves monetarily? What about tourists from other countries? Think about how much money is pumped into the Orlando economy via tourism, and then spend a microsecond considering who they are likeyly to encounter, and the impact on weather they would decide to return. If Orlando allows crime to get more out of control than it already is, you can be assured that this snowball running downhill will have an excellent chance in hell as did Miami and Detroit. Threat Against Orlando Police Officers May Have Come From Within
I have no doubt a lot of criminal drug cases get thrown out due to 'illegal procedures'. Are cops as a whole perfect? No. Do a majority of the cases get thrown out due to technicalities? No. In an imperfect system do you throw the baby out with the bath water? How do you better the system? Better leaders, not crony appointments. Better standards and better pay. It is a crime when you commit a crime irregardless of whether some scheister lawyer using pettyfoggery gets you off the hook or not. It seems to an every growing number of folks that the whole legal justice system is broke and skewerd toward criminal rights and ensuring that as long as you have money you can walk out the court room doors. They are selling crack cocaine hand over fist ten blocks west of the downtown police station, yet one gets the suspicion that their hands are tied because the jail system is over full, and if they are only harming themselves - the public seems unconcerned. As a Libertarian, I would normally agree, but as someone who works the streets, I can attest to the fact that I have never know ANYONE who can smoke crack in moderation.
