It's because men are very visual. They're much more "influenced " by visual stimuli, so if a man sees an attractive woman, it's pretty hard not to stare. Actually, there's a very robust neo-Nazi movement in Germany from what I see on the news. Probably brought on by their bitterness at being forced to pay reparations to people they've NEVER directly affected or interacted with. Impose reparations here in America, the the same animosities and bitterness will emerge. We have a black President, the civil rights movement was 45 years ago, and things have come a long way here in America. SO what did people do for the thousands of years before health insurance and all this wonderful medical technology we enjoy today, 85% of which didn't even exist 35+ years ago? Somehow, we rose from Biblical times with people riding on camels and living in mud huts to the great society today, almost all of that progress WITHOUT health insurance and MRIs, and advanced prescription drugs. Just because a technology has been invested in, developed, and works doesn't mean access to it is a "right." YOu have access to it if you're willing and able to pay for it. The government of Germany, the Nazis, set out to commit genocide (i.e. exterminate the entire race of Jews). They succeeded in building concentration camps, killing 6 million Jews, and torturing millions more. THat government of Germany, supported by its people, was defeated in WWII, and the people of Germany paid reparations to the people they directly impacted. In the U.S., the U.S. government abolished slavery in the early-mid 1800s. The southern stats formed the Confederacy and seceded from the Union. The Union(i.e. the United States) went to war with the Confederacy, defeated them, and in victory forced them back into the union and abolished slavery. What followed, Reconstruction, essentially amounted to "reparations " in a sense. BOTTOM LINE: 1. Show me ONE person alive today who was a slave in pre-1865 America. If they're still alive, we can pay reparations to them. You can't. Any descendant of slaves alive today is at least 3-4 generations removed from slavery. Hence, NO reparations 2. The United States government in existence today is the one that went to war to defeat the Confederacy and free the slaves. Asking the united States to pay reparations to black people for slavery that took place pre-1865 would be like coming up back in 2085 and demanding that the United States, Canada, and Great Britain pay reparations to the Jews for WWII. 3. Who pays and who receives reparations? Many of the people in the United States today are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th generation immigrants. In other words, their grandparents or great grandparents moved to America within the last 145 years. SUREly they aren't responsible for paying reparations, and surely, if they're African-American, they're not entitled to any reparations, even if you disregard points #1 and #2 above. 4. Even "poor" African-Americans in this country enjoy a lifestyle that's rich when compared to their African counterparts. Even those living in "the projects" receive Welfare, Medicaid, drive cars, have TVs, refrigerators, electricity, running water, cell phones, etc. Many have satellite TV or Cable, and ALL have access to nice well-stocked air conditioned grocery stores. I challenge you to show me someone in America today, who's actually descended from pre-1865 American slaves who'd be better off had their ancestors remained in African. Reparations are a complete joke. There's no validity to them, and there's no way to equitably pay them. Even IF the U.S. government starts sending checks to African Americans, African-Americans are going to have to pay higher taxes to cover their own checks. Even proposing it is nothing but folly, as is comparing it to the Germans paying reparations to the directly affected Jews from WWII.  (Jul 11, 2009 | post #1069)
