Firefighters battle blazes across region
Someone said that everyone gets paid for fighting these fires. WRONG! Yes, the vast majority get paid, but there are volunteers out there too. Right now, two of our volunteer EMT's are sitting on the fire line. Yes, they're getting paid for a change, but because they're unavailable I'm having to bring in extra volunteers to cover their shifts. Which means taking people away from their normal paying jobs, so they can help when someone gets sick or injured. To make that simple, while two of our EMT's are getting paid, six more have the possibility of losing work time. Yup, everyone makes a LOT of money fighting fires. NOT! (Jun 24, 2008 | post #27)
Man killed in Friday wreck on Route 36
I'm going to go on a different tangent and offer my sympathies to the family. They're friends of mine and this time is very difficult for them. Its amazing trolls don't realize their crass remarks aren't always funny and often hurt feelings. (Jun 3, 2008 | post #12)
There's a notice at the beginning of 36 near 101 that states anything over 33 feet from kingpin back shouldn't go across the highway. In the last few years, this recommendation is getting heeded less and less. We are frequently seeing trucks that shouldn't be on that road on it. If you've ever been across highway 36, you know that its not a road for big rigs. I suspect that part of the reason we're seeing this increase in traffic on 36 is because of the increase on traffic on 299 and 20. Truckers are looking for roads less traveled and they think 36 is it. I wish they'd heed the length warnings. (May 30, 2008 | post #15)
I know FirstResponder very well and know what the whole point of that comment was. The STAR ambulance volunteers, STVFD, and the USFS had people over the bank and in very precarious positions. The helo flew in, picked the person up, and flew back out. FirstResponder wasn't requesting a Thank You, but more of an acknowledgement of everyone who was involved, not just the flight crew. No, we don't do this for the thanks and if you knew FirstRepsonder you'd know he's not the person who wants kudos for himself. He just wanted everyone to be recognized, not just one organization. Older pumps can't keep up with gas prices
It is like a big family when you shop at Indianola Market. Shelly constantly tries to do right by her customers. Plus the hot dogs are divine! (May 20, 2008 | post #2)
Great. Even still we'd have to drive to Santa Rosa. How does this really help the Eureka/Arcata area? (Jan 25, 2008 | post #3)
