Ocoee seeks stability after firing police chief for 'series of ...
I never dealt with Mr. Reffett one-on-one but I have been at a couple of Home Owner Association Meetings he was kind enough to attend. We saw increased police presence and a decrease in vandalism. I think the results he got were great but he obviously has some workplace edict issues. It's a shame that a man with such knowledge and leadership ability can't police his own actions. I have heard rumors from inside sources about his dependency on prescription medications so the fact that he was terminated after a drug related incident is no surprise. I feel bad for those employees that had to make the decision to go over his head but it was the right thing to do and the City Manager who had to terminate a friend. I want to believe that Mr. Reffett is a good person who has a prescription drug problem. For those individuals from South Florida that are under the impression that the City of Ocoee is a rural, "back-woods ", "good-old-boy " community, you're wrong. I encourage you to pay a visit to our city and try to find one cow, one orange grove, or even a dirt road for that matter. We deal with the same problems as Orlando, Miami, WPB, Jacksonville, and Tampa. I hope Mr. Reffett finds some help with his problem. I wish him and his family the best during this tough time. Mayor: Ocoee police chief fired over poor decisions
Ron Reffett’s termination wasn’t personal, it’s just business. Ultimately, it comes down to the money. He was a lawsuit waiting to happen and no one can argue that. Although I support his efforts to clean-up West Orange County, he made some bad judgment calls in the workplace and it should be a learning experience for all involved. Steven Goclon will keep things operational until Ocoee finds a new leader. An inside source tells me they have their eyes on a woman from Seminole County Sheriff's Office. Good luck Ocoee and Mr. Reffett. (Jun 21, 2008 | post #55)
Ocoee Police Say 20-Percent Of Officers Have Applied For Deputy...
Well, I did a little investigating on my own and found a FDLE report online that shows how many officers work at the Police Department. It shows 67. 20% of 67 is 14 officers. That leaves 53 officers for a city with 35,000 residents. FDLE uses an officer-to-citizen ratio formula (Cops/1,000 Residents). That puts Ocoee at 1.5 cops for every 1,000 residents. In comparison here is how surrounding cities rate: OPD-3.51 Winter Garden-1.96 (not to good either) Windermere-4.16 Winter Park-3.08 Oakland-4.08 Maitland-2.91 Eatonville-5.9! http://www.fdle.st ate.fl.us/cjst/cja p/2007/ratios/rati o_pd.html (May 2, 2008 | post #9)

Now that's an idea. Let's eliminate the human factor all together and let the robots do our prostate exams. I'm no robotic engineer but I don't think they would care about going to jail. Does "Death Central" have robots? I think not... (May 1, 2008 | post #35)

Well on the bright side, if some wacko vigilante actually does go to his house and kills him, the police will know exactly where to find his body. GPS probation may benefit him in the end. (May 1, 2008 | post #34)

You mean "Death Central"? If I was bleeding out from the femoral artery, I would drive the extra 15 minutes to ORMC. (May 1, 2008 | post #28)

Apparently, the director of personell is Mr. Jim Carnicella and it just so happends that the chief is from the same area. Hmmmm. You think Mr. Carnicella owes him a favor or something? Maybe the feds do need to get involved. You were right. WFTV has been pretty quiet since this story broke, maybe they are going to follow-up with something big. Google Reffett and there are some interesting stories about his past... (May 1, 2008 | post #7)

I say they fire the chief and distribute his salary in the form of raises and benifits so cops don't leave their beats. Got to be at least $100K right? (May 1, 2008 | post #3)
