Obama Readying Immigration Overhaul Despite Political Risks

The vaunted California university system is taking huge hits due to the budget crisis; scientists will take their research projects to other educational institutions in other states, thus dimming the stature of the post-secondary system. The best & the brightest students will follow the research professors, thus damaging the university system even more. But for people that have the lowest high-schol graduation rates in America,I'm guessing the loss of prestiege and brain-power matters little.  (1 hr ago | post #124)

Obama To Give 12M Amnesty By 2010

Verification upon offer of employment; employers proven to have knowingly hired illegal aliens will be fined 'til their ears bleed. Checking for lawful presence in the country upon arrest. Verifying lawful presence in country when applying for social services. Strict enforcement of visa time-limits.Over-s tay visa,do some time then booted out of country, unless the need for political asylum is rock-solid proven. All documents related to government services/license/p ermits in English only.No can read nor speak English, you don't need to be driving the roads. No can read nor speak English, don't need business permit because you won't understand tax laws and OSHA regs. This will result in a large percentage of 'self-deportation' ,which would be an excellent start. Want to see how the 'come one, come all' lax immigration policies work? Look at the UK.  (1 hr ago | post #576)

Immigration law ignites fear in Arizona

USDA.gov & CDC.gov are a treasure-trove of govt. stats; can search by 'tuberculosis by ethnicity' 'Diabetes rates by ethnicity','HIV' 'obesity rates',ect on CDC.Can do a regional search by disease; surprisingly,TB & hepatitis rates are higher in border states-must be the unhealthy air & water, right? 'WIC participation by ethnicity' 'food stamp participation by ethnicity',ect on USDA site.Takes a bit of digging, but worth the info you find. Google 'Hispanic high school drop out rates' for numerous informative articles and stats from unbiased sources, such as university-based studies.  (3 hrs ago | post #49)

Missing Brighton nurse escapes captor

I'm thankful the woman safely escaped, but I too have to wonder-this man was incarcerated for two years, and no one knew? She was engaged to him,and was never curious as to what he was doing with his life from 2006-2008? Never saw any tax records/returns paperwork laying out? Socialized with any of his long-term friends or family members? Call me suspicious/paranoi d/overly cautious, but KNOWING there are con artists/sociopaths wandering loose in society makes me nosy for my own survival.A $100 background check may be all that stands between you and a psycho you're about to marry. From Denver media- Cox has been divorced three times, records show. He has an extensive arrest history of 41 charges, including several for domestic violence and crimes upon women. He was arrested on kidnapping charges in Thornton, Denver and Arapahoe County in the 1980s, two of which also included additional charges of sexual assault. His record also includes arrests for drug possession, contempt of court, resisting arrest, threats on a police officer, drunken driving and harassment, classified in court records as "strikes, shoves or touches." Records show Cox was released from prison on parole in 2008 after serving two years on conviction for menacing with a deadly weapon in La Plata County in 2005.  (3 hrs ago | post #66)

Youth trek from Miami to DC for immigrant rights

Your forum handle sums up the crux of the debate;'Latino' pride, not 'American' pride. You do not want to be an American, just reap the benefits of being in the country. No desire to assimilate and learn the language and cultural aspects, only the goal to recreate that third-world country you left.  (12 hrs ago | post #57)

Do some background research before you type and prove what an uninformed moron you are... http://www.nytimes .com/2010/01/02/us /02immig.html Three of the four protesters, who are current or former students at Miami Dade College, do not have legal-resident status and risk detention by immigration authorities during the 1,500-mile walk.  (12 hrs ago | post #49)

Arrested/deported 5+ times;he's back again

He admitted that the 269 grams of methamphetamine found in his house on Enchanted Lane in Buckner Terrace was his. As was the $12,780 cash in his bedroom. The 45-year-old also told them he had been deported nine times and had a drug conviction. Robles' criminal history shows California arrests from 1986 to 1998 for narcotics possession, assault with a firearm, hit and run with property damage, giving a false name to a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and receiving stolen property. In Dallas, Robles was convicted for driving while intoxicated in 1996 and resisting arrest the following year. (let's grant him amnesty! He'll pay taxes!)  (12 hrs ago | post #1)

Google is your friend;search 'Hispanic high school drop out rates' http://nces.ed.gov /ssbr/pages/dropou trates.asp?IndID=2 7 In 2002, almost one-third of status dropouts (30 percent) ages 16-24 were Hispanics who were born outside of the United States 3 (table 1). Higher dropout rates among Hispanic immigrants partly account for the persistently high dropout rates for all Hispanics. Among Hispanic 16- through 24-year-olds who were born outside the United States, the status dropout rate of 41 percent in 2002 was more than double the rates for first- or later-generation Hispanics in this age group born in the United States (14 and 11 percent, respectively). Nevertheless, Hispanics born in the United States were more likely to be high school dropouts than their non-Hispanic counterparts. http://www.ericdig ests.org/2004-3/la tino.html Regardless of how dropping out is defined, first, second, and third and higher generation Hispanic youth drop out of school at similar rates (National Center for Education Statistics). That third generation Latino youth perform not significantly better than their second generation Latino peers is very disconcerting. Since they have U.S. born parents, a much larger share of their parents have finished high school and accordingly have higher incomes. Yet these parental advantages do not seem to result in significantly better school performance. Today's Latino students, regardless of how long their ancestors have been in the U.S., are on average markedly less likely to graduate high school on time in comparison to white students. The inferences that one can draw from the similarity in high dropout rates across generations of Hispanic students are important but circumscribed. All Hispanic U.S. educated students dropout at higher rates than white students and thus it is likely that for the foreseeable future Latino adult educational attainment will trail white educational attainment.  (12 hrs ago | post #547)

A friend had a roofing business that was started by his grandfather, passed down to his father, then to the son. This business provided a middle-class lifestyle, and put several offspring through college. My friend finally had to throw in the towel and close down a 60-year business, due to the fact that he abided by the law as far as paying taxes, workers' comp premiums, and adhering to OSHA regulations, which the roofing businesses in this area run by illegals did not. As far as restaurant work, this is a job filled by many a college student.  (Yesterday | post #540)

'Illegals don't use social services....'

Violins-and-kleene x story about illegal mama.. http://www.azcentr al.com/news/articl es/2010/01/01/2010 0101des.html A 23-year-old undocumented woman from Mexico said a DES worker called her earlier this month and asked her if she had "papers. " The call came after she had applied to renew public benefits, including food stamps and basic medical services, for her 11-month-old daughter, a U.S. citizen, through the state's Medicaid program. (Why would she & her husband, both 'hard workers',need the taxpayers to feed and provide medical care for her child??) She said she also applied for emergency medical assistance for herself, her husband and her 5-year-old son, all of whom are undocumented. The woman, who asked that her name not be published out of fear she could be deported, said the DES worker asked only about the immigration status of her, her husband and the 5-year-old, not the U.S. citizen daughter. But all of them, including the baby, were denied benefits. "They asked me if I, my husband and child had papers, and I said I wasn't going to answer, and they said if I didn't answer, they wouldn't renew my benefits," the woman said. (You got greedy,my dear, when you tried to hoist your illegal self, your illegal husband, and your illegal son aboard the freebie gravy train-no sympathy here) Tara McCollum Plese, director of government and media relations for the Arizona Association of Community Health Centers, said she thinks people are giving up services and benefits to which they are entitled rather than risk being reported to ICE. Her group association includes 16 federally qualified health centers with 130 sites across the state that provide services regardless of ability to pay or immigration status. "I am hearing from a lot of our health clinics that they have seen a real precipitous drop in the demand for services," McCollum Plese said.< > The law, passed by the state Legislature in September as part of the state budget, requires Department of Economic Security workers to report to ICE the names of people who apply for public benefits if they admit they are in the country illegally. Workers who fail to report suspected illegal immigrants can be charged with a misdemeanor. The first three weeks after the law took effect, DES workers reported the names of 772 people who sought public benefits and were believed to be in the country illegally. That breaks down to an average of 45 per day, excluding weekends and holidays. ( looks as if Sheriff Joes' job is about to get a lot easier....)  (Friday | post #1)
