Do you walk up to people in the grocery store and ask them to please put that cherry jello away as people find it offensive? How about if I walked up to some 22 year old sexpot in short shorts and asked her to please put on more clothes as I found her outfit offensive? What if I walked up to you and asked you to lose weight or carry on with a girl your own age since I found it offensive? the fact is, while people SHOULD try to be inoffensive whenever possible, that does NOT mean kowtowing to the prejudice of the tyrannical majority. Sometimes RIGHT trumps popular. If straights can kiss in public so can queers. Accept it or stay inside with the TV off.  (Wednesday Nov 25 | post #98)

Taylor Swift is fine for teenage doe-eyed little girls who like to think that they're crush on the guy in math class is true love. She's this generation's Debbie Gibson and she'll last just as long. Adam Lambert may not be any more lasting (time will tell) but he's no less valid, that's for sure. In fact, like Boy George and Elton John, he will go down in history as yet another gay man who didn't shy away in the closet (George Michael, David Bowie, etc) and instead brought into the mainstream the fact that gay people exist and aren't all going to play it platonic to keep everyone else happy.  (Tuesday Nov 24 | post #16)

Transsexualism, actually gender identity disorder, is a medical condition listed in the DSM-IV and is considered treatable. The treatment is hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery. After ten years, the hope that Thomson will be opened as a state prison are all but dead. It has about 2000 beds and I think 150 of them have ever been used. It's like buying a junk car to fix up and never getting around to it. Sure, it would be best to fix it up and drive it. I find it VERY telling that you put the term civil rights in quotes. It shows how much respect you have for them. We are a country built upon the notion of civil rights for ALL, not just for some and not just for American citizens. What you see as Bush doing everything within his power to keep us safe, I see as Bush doing whatever he could at the cost of this country. I saw him try to kill what this country stood for, civil rights, checks and balances, liberty. He tried to keep people alive, MAYBE, but at what cost? He cr@pped on the bill of rights, and you put the words civil liberties in quotes. We are the nation of due process, of innocent until proven guilty, of not just declaring people evil and shooting them on sight without a trial. It's what America was built on and it's what we stand for. It's why we shouldn't torture and it's why we should give SUSPECTS, unconvicted suspects some of whom may actually turn out to be innocent (it's been known to happen) a chance. ANd it's why we should close down Gitmo. The rest of the world sees us now as one of the bad guys based on Bush's policies of extreme rendition and "enhanced interrogation techniques". Yes, the bad guys do worse, but we aren't them and we shouldn't be happy with just being a little over that bar. We are supposed to stand up as the nation of honor, and dignity, and moral certicude. You may disagree with Obama, and it's clear you do, but Bush was no winner when he declared himself and the US above all authority. We don't need to be the bully nation anymore. We can and should close Gitmo (even your precious Bush was willing to do that), and as long as we need to move those guys somewhere, it might as well be where federal paychecks will go in local coffers. I won't argue you on nuclear rods, because I haven't reasearched that subject. But I would personally feel safer with gitmo detainees in Thomson than nuclear waste.  (Thursday Nov 19 | post #17)

Kelly mentions terrorists and their families. What families are you talking about? You really think they'd move all over trying to get close? Why? There are NO visiting hours for a super-max prison. And new terrorists coming here? I'm pretty sure, having lived in this white-bread area my whole life, that any middle eastern person moving to Thomson (population 500 or so) would attract notice, something terrorists are notoriously unlikely to do since it botches their chances of getting away with terrorizing people. I'm not sure there are a dozen non WASP people in all of Thomson so I think new non-prison-employe e people, let alone foreigners, would stand out like a sore thumb. This was always a maximum security prison. It was ALWAYS going to house serial killers and gangs and bombers and child rapist/killers. But state prisons bring with them an influx of visitors (and friends of inmates tend to be former and future inmates) and prison gypsies. Prison gypsies are the families of inmates who move from town to town as the inmate is transferred between prisons, to stay close to their loved one, because the state will send a welfare check to any address. The difference now? No gypsies, no visitors, more security. We already house terrorists on US soil. I love it when I hear people talk like anyone who doesn't have benefits just doesn't want to work full time. I heard this argument from several repub governors during the stimulus debate. Why should they extend unemployment benefits to people who are unwilling to work a full time job? As if the single mom who works 3 waitressing jobs because she can't FIND a full time job is unwilling. And now people who don't have employer-provided health insurance "can't find the time to get a job." What about the self-employed, or the recently laid off, or again - the person working multiple part time or temp jobs while trying to find a full time job? What about farmers, and retail workers, and all the other people who WANT to work, who in fact DO work, but who don't receive employer-provided health insurance? I suppose there just wouldn't be cracks if some people weren't meant to fall through them, huh.  (Tuesday Nov 10 | post #45)

You reverse the cause and effect, my friend. When you take impressing the opposite sex out of the equation, you also remove many reasons for adhering to societal gender roles. Why bother with long flowing hair when your partner understands what a hassle it is? Why shave your legs when your partner understands that human legs grow hair, and doesn't care if yours do. Why worry about make up and nail polish when your partner loves you for who you are without it, and isn't interested in proving her manhood to the other guys? Women aren't gay because they don't look femmy. Some of them choose not to look femmy because they're gay. I am pro-choice, but that doesn't mean that the choice has to be made affordable. I believe people have the choice of whether or not to have any elective medical procedure, but they don't all have to be covered by insurance. The whole "What if they can't afford it" argument doesn't carry water with me, sorry. For one thing, many abortion clinics already charge on a sliding scale so it's not like they cost thousands of dollars as it is now. For another, what if people can't afford lots of stuff? I believe in the public option, for HEALTH care, not for convenience. If an abortion is medically necessary then fine, cover it. But not as an elective surgery. Insurance companies do that already with other procedures that could go either way. If your back bothers you because of weight up front, breast reduction is covered; if you just want to look different it's not. To over-simplify, cover prescriptions, not over the counters. And for the record, some states mandate that any insurance company doing business within the state cover birth control. I don't know which ones do, but in Illinois, it's covered. There are also plenty of women's health clinics and county health departments handing it out for free too.  (Monday Nov 9 | post #29)

I personally don't see why abortions have to be federally funded, but I don't think government should tell private insurance NOT to cover something. And what's with the hate for vasectomies? Vasectomies help men AND women. If I were a woman who didn't want any more kids, I'd be pretty pissed if insurance would pay for invasive surgery for me but not an outpatient procedure for my husband. That would be more sexist, to say "we'll only pay if the woman undergoes major surgery."  (Monday Nov 9 | post #3)
