Atheism

Atheism requires as much faith as religion?

I have to add. I didn't really feel he was trying to convert me. Clearly I was not converting him. Number one, I'm not stupid. I was having a fundamental discussion of the basis of human morality with for all intents and purposes, a monk. I wasn't going to sway him. Number two, that is never is my goal at all. I wasn't trying to "win", I was trying to understand the other side of the conversation with someone that truly believes, and walks the walk. He does. He is idealistic. So am I, but for very different reasons.  (Aug 28, 2012 | post #119037)

Atheism requires as much faith as religion?

So I go bored after we all went to dinner. I went to the bar. The republican convention is on the TV. There are 5 people at the bar divided into a couple intense conversations. I picked one. Between a divinity PHD student and a guy from Texas. The divinity student appeared really smart, rational. Well spoken. He believes in evolution, physics, universe, whole nine yards as far as that goes. Texas guy not as much. We pointed out how much he contradicted himself. I found I almost entirely was on the divinity students side for everything. Except, the Jesus is our Savior thing, and the reason why I feel the things I feel. Which I found odd, but not that odd. I had to pursue that conversation. So we kicked drunk Texas out of the conversation. He would come back from time to time. "Can I come back now" I said NO. "Can I ever come back?" NO. It was interesting. He firmly believes I have no basis for treasuring human life above all unless it is because of Jesus Christ. I said that it not the basis, it was just an innate belief. He could not buy that. I did not have a basis to found anything on. To prove I had a reason to hold my moral convictions. He said he had a basis for his morals, that Jesus Christ is our Saviour. And that if I couldn't come up with a "reason" for why I valued life and the well being of others, humans above all, and animals besides. Not littering, you name it. That I had no argument. I tried to explain how innately natural and important it is for basic for our survival over the long term. That it made ME happy to make those around me happy, make the good choices. That yes, I was raised that way and that helps. And beyond that overall complete awe with science and our quest for knowledge and our achievements give me hope and pride. It was a good back and forth. Actually it was me saying how I felt, and him explaining why it was because of Jesus. He didn't convince me. He did make some points. He was wasn't a stupid man. Unlike Texas. I hope I made some good points, but he didn't hear. I don't care. I was not trying to convert him away from his faith. I just wanted an honest conversation. And it was. It was never an argument. Point is, this was a real back and forth between two people, in person. Basically common ground. A good dialogue. I respect him. Very different than trading insults on an online forum.  (Aug 28, 2012 | post #119034)

Atheists can't have it both ways

What point are you trying to make? In my opinion, you have simply conveniently detailed why you are wrong. I am not a mean person. But the last two rants were insanity, IMO.  (Aug 25, 2012 | post #2072)

GOP tripped up by new abortion fight

Don't attack me. I am a girl and I cry easy. You truly don't think I've been paying attention? I have since before I could vote. I have pretty strong opinion. I don't "fit" neatly on a side. I choose republican now as I always have. I am registered unaffiliated. I have no other responsible option. Am I middle class? Yes. Well I was, 65K might be considered wealthy any day now. Am I educated? Yes BS Comp Sci. Not History, or Pshcy, English. I am employed. I was before I graduated. I have never had an issue there. I think we agree. Am I wrong?  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #22)

Don't make assumptions. I am not a registered Republican. I an registered unaffliated. I am debating the very critical choice that we must make as a nation. I'm libertarian. So any regligious affiliation is a negative in my mind. But we can't get away from that. It is expected, you have profess some version of Christian faith or you will never be elected. I hope that changes. I have just picked the lesser of two evils? The one that is most aligned with my views, I don't know if I trust Romney. I can't just any politician. I trust he will do less damage.4855  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #16)

Should Black Voters Give Romney-Ryan A Chance?

Healthcare is not a commodity. Yes, it is. It isn't a right. It cost money. A lot of money. I pay a fairly large portion of my salary for it. Nothing is free.  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #573)

Again, I truly apologize. I only mad it about halfway through the thread before I just was compelled to respond to a post. I didn't read the entire. Which as a rule I do, for just the reason. This is why I don't generally post at all. I just observe. I just got pushed over the edge. This is a critical time for our country. In am a little passionate about it.  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #230)

Hey I see your point. I apologize. I am not hard line. There is way to much gray. Yeah, I pay taxes for plenty of things. Some I just don't use, that is Ok, some I disagree with, this is I vote. I just got worked up. You are rational, you present valid arguments I always respect that.  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #228)

Obamacare. It is the definition anti libertarian, it is the opposite. You do know the basic principles of libertarians, right? Small, very limited government, free will, as long you don't infringe in anyone else's liberties. Google it  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #227)

You don't have to buy the lima beans. That argument misses the entire point. The government has zero business mandating what they have to provide. Private companies shouldn't have to provide anything. I know, technically they "don't". That is shell game, a flat out lie. But they get fined. BS. For any private business, big and small, I believe the largest expense they incur as far as hiring. Talk about a small business killer. Big businesses feel the hit just same or more, they just pass it on you the employee. I have seen it mushroom in my career. I have worked for both GIANT (IBM) as well as start ups. You dont notice as much, if you don't pay attention, coming out of your check. It is getting more and more of a part of compensation. My take home pay has been stagnant for 5 years, but I sure am paying increasing more for health insurance. So II guess technically I have been getting raises.. I'm paying attention. I don't know the answer, but I do know government controlled health care is the end. Government controlled anything never is cost effective. I love our military and NASA, but they are incredibly inefficient too.  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #225)

Thank you. The issue is not the Catholic Church being force to provide certain coverages. It is the notion that ANY private company should be told what the provide to thier employees. It is shocking to me. You employer shouldn't have to provide shit, or provide what they can afford. Or what they damn want to. The provide these benefits to attack talent, if they can afford it. I have never heard of, nor had birth control covered. Jesus that is about the cheapest thing you can get. They don't cover braces, or laser eye surgery. Those are damn expensive. But I shelled out the money for me to get the eye surgery for myself, and for my son to have braces. It was worth it to me and I paid. I didn't complain. Those seem more worthy to me. Is obamacare eventually going to expand to cover those? That is inflicting an enormous expense, someone will pay. We will pay. One way or another, either lower salaries, higher premiums, or both.  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #222)

You are not libertarian is you support this. It is contradictory on the most basic level.  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #220)

Wow, just wow is exactly what I keep repeating in my head reading this thread. I am truly afraid now for this country. Actually human kind. I am agnostic, non religious. Actually vehemently anti religions, though I don't preach that. I am a libertarian. I not a democratic for damn sure. I am very conservative, fiscally conservative. Socially neither liberal or conservative. I am a libertarian. If you don't cause harm to me, I don't care what you do. When I say "me" I mean anyone... But I'm don't think I should be compelled by the government to save you if you use your free will to destroy yourself. (Drugs, prostitution, many more) I was raised in a religious family. Catholic. I just can't buy it. I am pretty sure I never did. I am spiritual. Is there a larger meaning to all this? I like to think so. I kind of believe so. But nobody told me what to think, what to do, what is right and what is wrong. I am a child of the "religion " of science. ic If you to be compelled to be kind, humane, empathetic because you fear punishment? You are NOT kind, you are NOT humane, you are not empathetic. It should be human nature. It scares the crap out of me that most of humanity are indoctrinated jnto whatever "faith" (cult) it may be I am an equal opportunity critic. They are all cults. There are some good people in the cults I guess. But I really don't believe they truly buy in. I think there are a myriad or reasons, family pressure, social pressure. provide a structure for you family... Don't ever accuse me of being evil, or a socialist, Nazi, marxist Whatever. You don't know. I do know however, that you are brainwashed. Simple minded? Uneducated? You need a myth. Sorry for the rant. I rarely post. But this really pissed me off, disturbed me. The root of this thread? Who will I vote for? Romney. I have doubts how truly endoctrinated he is. But I could be wrong. But it is not more or worse a cult than others. indoctrinated  (Aug 24, 2012 | post #219)
