Atheism

Abuses Of Toxic Religions

It galls me to hear fundies say, "thank god" whenever one of them survives some medical procedure.... If their evil god was real? **Why** did their god allow them to get sick in the **first** place? <gag>  (13 hrs ago | post #31)

Abuses Of Toxic Religions

Agree: willful ignorance is deplorable. It's unbecoming of a sentient being.  (13 hrs ago | post #30)

Abuses Of Toxic Religions

I agree. Except? Fundies are effectively drunk off their *sses.... :p As such, they cannot permit this to apply to themselves... antiprocess kicks in, you see. "http://en.wi kipedia.org/wiki/A ntiprocess"  (13 hrs ago | post #29)

As long as you're not killing them? I'd go for more serious penalties for pedophiles. Why against death? Because....courts are made up of humans. Humans screw up. A lot. A really, really lot. If you kill someone **by mistake*** that is **worse** I think, than if you accidentally let one run loose-- -- after all, part of a society ought to be geared to have "protect the kids" in place with regards to **prevention**, not reaction (which is what incarcerating/kill ing a perp is). As for flashers/voyeurs? My reaction to those weaklings, is.... so what... ...a healthy-minded kid won't be affected by such silliness--- kids are far more resilient than adults anyhow. Either he'll be too young to recognize what just happened, and at worst, curiosity will kick in, and he'll ask his parents. Who, hopefully, won't over-react, and will explain it in terms he can get-- ( "some people are just stupid" or similar). If he's older, hopefully he'll already have a strong sense of self-identity, and again, at worst, find it funny or stupid or both. Or, maybe if he's empathetic, embarrassing for the flasher's stupidity. In any case, it is also hoped he'll have a healthy conversational relationship with his parents, and talk to them about it-- they may even help him go through the process of reporting it, a very useful lesson to learn in any case. As for voyeurs? Who cares? They are dismal folk, in my opinion, and mostly harmless. The more we go to high-tech societies, the more we are being watched anyhow..... ...go look for a book called "Lacey and his Friends" by David Drake. "http://www.a mazon.com/Lacey-Hi s-Friends-David-Dr ake/dp/0671655930/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 &s=books&q id=1259454109& sr=8-1" It's about a society who went entirely down the path of "everybody is being watched, 100% of the time....".  (13 hrs ago | post #138)

The evil "three strikes laws" are an anathema to a rational, thinking society. They do not belong, in a culture that is based on Rule Of Law. They usurp the role of a Judge-- you may as well use a mindless, unemotional computer program as a "judge" in those cases. Nothing **to** judge, if the three-strikes kicks in....! Evil, is what they are-- the very definition of "cruel and unusual". But, politicians are in serious fear for their very careers to go against this idiocy.... As Ben Franklin said once: "People willing to trade freedom for a little security deserve neither." The three strikes laws are **exactly** that: a perceived (but false) security. The cost, is a serious compromise of the due process guaranteed by the constitution. *gag*  (13 hrs ago | post #137)

Theory of Intelligent Design

Wow! That's amazing. I don't think I've read an essay composed of so many $20 words, arranged in such a pretty fashion. Imagine that: hundreds of dollars worth of words, arranged in such a way, as to be utterly devoid of any rational meaning. That has to be a record of some kind.  (13 hrs ago | post #2319)

The key word here is "seems". That is, to *your* limited perception, it appears this is "true". However? It's not. Education: that's the key to understanding *why* it's not true.  (13 hrs ago | post #2318)

I truly wish I knew-- I did some research back in October, but that went nowhere. By clicking on his profile, you can see he's not on-line, and that the last thing he posted was in August of 2009. I'm really worried-- I hope he's okay, truly. *sigh*  (13 hrs ago | post #25844)

Then? You would be suggesting wrong. The **only** continent where Christianity's numbers is **not** in decline? Africa-- and only then, due to the Cat'lick extremism, forcing themselves in, sometimes at implied gunpoint.... World-wide, more and more folk are claiming "other" when asked about religion.....  (13 hrs ago | post #1143)

Atheists on the march in America

Good. On Thursday, my folks and I spluged on a local eatery advertising "traditional thanksgiving feast". They weren't kiddin', it was-- I took 1/2 home, and had a 2nd go for supper. So did my mom & dad. We had a nice conversation. Friday, we had more family in, from out of town, but had spiral-cut ham instead (courtesy of my brother's profession-- he's a Professional Methodist. <grin>) We had pie, etc-- all the trimmin's One of the pies, I brought, and it was too cool: it was supposedly an ethnic recipe for pecan pie. The filling was a classical pecan custard, but the crust was shortbread, instead of wheat-"cracke r" style ubiquitous to the USA. By that, it was thicker, and more crumbly-- at least 1/4" thick, quite dry, and crumbled like a quality hard-crust bread/cracker. I imagine they pre-cooked the crust, prior to putting in the pecan custard-- in fact, they may well have prepared the custard separately, then before it sets up fully, bring both together for a final oven-finish. Who knows? I may have to google. It was quite good, however-- I'm not at all fond of those rubbery, glue-like "crusts" so common in pre-prepared pies... more like wet newspaper, or perhaps play-doh before it hardens... <bleah> :D  (14 hrs ago | post #10533)

politics as an alternative to war, the problem with democracies is that you get EXACTLY what you vote for...

I Believe In:

Optimism. Human Beings. Human Culture. The eventual ability of people to see reason, beyond "scary eyes in the dark beyond the campfire". Humans are at their best, when striving to reach beyond their own self-imposed limitations--especially to help a stranger in need. Humans are at their worst, when thinking THEY are the ONLY person with "the answer".
