I have to take issue with the comment that a sissy was a boy who rebelled against what he had to accept. When I was in school, a boy like that would have been termed just that, a rebel, or worse, a troublemaker. They didn't like to follow the dress code (no blue jeans, etc), they wore their hair their own way (ducktails, etc), and so on. A sissy was something else. A sissy carried his books like a girl; he was a little effeminate, and that's pretty much it. You might hear the word queer now and then but most kids really had only the vaguest idea of what that meant. And this was all in a place where schools just did even have swimming pools and there were no YMCAs anywhere near. In any given high school, even fairly small ones, there are always going to be these different sets of people, cliques, you could say, that are almost barely aware of other groups of people. Ironically, the rebels formed their own group to be a part of. Sissys didn't, though I don't remember anyone in particular being called a sissy. (Monday Dec 21 | post #396)

Another Oakland, CA, non-believer. I once spent the night with a friend before going with him and his mother and father to a day of boating (I had moved recently and was no longer a next door neighbor). We shared a bed. Do you imagine his mother was that naive that teenage boys never did anything? (Monday Nov 30 | post #181)

It is probably not surprising that teenagers are relatively scarce around nudist clubs in the United States. I suspect, however, that it isn't the nudity at all. No self-respecting teenager wants to be caught doing something with their parents. But there are nudist clubs and nudist beaches and in Europe, more "relaxed " rules about nudity, so frankly it is hard to generalize about conditions and behavior. I wasn't visiting any of those places when I was a teenager, though that was the day of showers at schools and even nude swimming in some pools (never mixed). Anyway, that all came later. I also believe the more relaxed attitude towards nudity came later, too, probably in the 1970s, judging from what my wife has told me. You shouldn't get the idea that everyone at a nudist club or beach is good looking or even close to it. Public attitudes towards nudity may or may not be a little more relaxed these days but the attitudes to physical fitness and appearance in nudist circles is certainly more relaxed than it used to be. I think "body acceptance" is the politically correct term. Even in Germany it went from "naked culture" to "free body culture." So basically it may not be as arousing as you would at first think. But you may be easily aroused! (Nov 19, 2009 | post #168)

Another one of those Oakland, California, non-believers. You should cross the bridge and visit San Francisco. There's a beach up close to the Golden Gate where nudity is tolerated. You might see something like this. But even in August, take a sweater. (Nov 19, 2009 | post #165)
