Why would anyone want to stay in Pahrump?

....LOL....Peter, I even like the fact that we have brothels here - I think THAT fact should be utilized more. I've never patronized any of them outside of a couple beers but you'd have to admit they're "tourist attractions". Lets not forget also the amount of money they contribute to the economy thru User Fees.  (Nov 27, 2008 | post #7)

Reinstated Paramedic Sues Nye County & Sheriff DeMeo

By HENRY BREAN LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL In the two years since he was arrested and accused of letting an elderly patient die, paramedic Carrol L. Meeks has won a clean slate from state regulators and got his job back with the Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service. Now he is going on the offensive. Meeks has filed a civil lawsuit against Pahrump, the fire-rescue service, the Nye County Sheriff's Office, and several of its officers, including Sheriff Tony DeMeo. He also is speaking publicly about the case for the first time. Authorities accused the men of leaving Wendler to die. Meeks and his lawsuit offer a very different account. The two men had their state licenses suspended in May 2007. Fernandes, who did not appeal the disciplinary action, got his license back after six months. Meeks successfully petitioned to have his suspension overturned and erased from his record in October 2007. The story of their arrests received extensive coverage in Southern Nevada, and it was shocking and unique enough to get picked up nationally. "There was ample evidence to bring charges", Sheriff DeMeo said. To date, however, neither Fernandes nor Meeks has been formally charged. According to DeMeo, prosecutors have another year to act before the statute of limitations runs out on the case. A message left for Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett was not immediately returned. Full story at: http://www.lvrj.co m/news/35122264.ht ml  (Nov 26, 2008 | post #1)

County Commissioner Liakopoulos Steps Down, Effective 12/31/08

Nye County District-5 Commissioner Peter Liakopoulos, who is awaiting trial on bribery charges has handed in his resignation. Announced in Tonopah, his resignation is said to be effective Dec. 31. "With the pressing issues that I face at this time, I felt it would be better to spend my time preparing for my trial", Liakopoulos said. "Due to the time and effort that I will have to expend on this issue it will be a challenge to continue to fulfill my duties as a Nye County commissioner. " Visiting Justice of the Peace Steven Dahl ruled during a preliminary hearing on Sept. 19 that there were grounds to bind Liakopoulos over to district court on one felony count of bribery along with misdemeanor counts of offering a reward for an appointment and grafting by a public officer. This was aledged when Liakopoulos wanted to trade support for an impending sales tax increase with the granting of a museum job for his wife. The trial "Will take place this coming spring", Liakopoulos said.  (Nov 26, 2008 | post #1)

Will the Big Three Automakers Survive?

....I'm sure you are aware "banks" are private businesses as well. As are insurance companies (AIG). Lets NOT mention the BILLIONS the FedGov has wrapped up in PRIVATE COMPANY paper (bills they have paid for small businesses)for short-term debt. ALL of that is guaranteed by the Federal Government. I'm sure you ARE ALSO aware "The Fed Gov" really means US - US TAXPAYERS. There is no magic money spreading government fairy, excluding of course Bush, Bernanke, & Paulson.  (Nov 26, 2008 | post #55)

Will the Big Three Automakers Survive?

HELLO....Can you say "We Have No More Money = Not Enough Customers"? Americans are IN HOCK up to their eyeballs. The typical customer no longer exists. The economy for the next 3+ years will not support 3-auto manufacturers. If our federal government bails them out as they have every other company that has asked for $$$, it will be an entire waste. Let them go bankrupt - have the courts settle it. I didn't like the "fat-headed I'm better then thou" attitude they displayed at the Hearings anyway. If the Toyota CEO can "get by" with $1-million a year salary then sure as He** Wagoner (the GM CEO) damn well can too! Otherwise he wouldn't get MY vote. I don't notice Toyota or Honda begging for cash....  (Nov 26, 2008 | post #50)

American Sovereign - Chris & Joshua Hanson

It's going to be sad to see these guys go. The libertarian based "American Sovereign" TV show recorded their last episode last night. This program was one of the best local programs shown on Channel 62 in Pahrump. Hosted by Chris Hanson & his son Joshua, it displayed a sad commentary on the state of the federal government in America. This father & son duo might be returning in January if more time slots open up. The local television station (channels 30 & 62) have been graciously providing this program as a public service and must now turn over the time period to an income producer. Thanks guys and thank you Channel #62 - you're a positive part of Pahrump!  (Nov 26, 2008 | post #1)

'Detention center' not a 'prison,' officials say

....My thought exactly. I think you'll find many more medical services will expand into Pahrump now that we have the hospital. I just read a news article about Lola Avenue being finished to the north so that you can reach the hospital without having to go around a couple of LONG BLOCKS. The ONLY positive thing I can see about that darned Detention Center being built here is the tax revenues received. Unfortunately, I think our economy will be getting bad enough that the 1-million dollars CCA will be paying in taxes will be MUCH NEEDED by Nye County before too long. Other then THAT though, I don't like the idea of that place being built here - I think the County Commissioners are already "bought and paid for" in approving it though. (I mean that only "figuratively " of course)  (Nov 25, 2008 | post #2)

Why would anyone want to stay in Pahrump?

I think you're talking about Seibt's RV Resort on the north side of town on Hwy-160? I hope you're not right. Utilities Inc. (the utility service that handles the water & sewage system here) is having MANY problems. The businesses in town are raising "cain" with their service fee increases that the CUP recently agreed to. Seymours Ice Cream took them to task for the exorbitant sewage fees they were being charged. Currently, unless they have sewer lines running under the roadwithin close proximity to your land, you can still put in a septic tank with the minimum lot size if your lot is "buildable " now. You'll LOVE gardening here though - we just completed our "greenhouse " for growing veggies in the winter. We're hoping to grow year-round now!  (Nov 25, 2008 | post #5)

Trial delayed again in little girl sex video case

Is it me or does anyone see a problem or concern here? "Authorities found the videos following Stiles' arrest in October 2007 in a storage shed Stiles used. Investigators reviewed the videos last month and discovered the new footage." It took investigators over a YEAR to go through the evidence found in the storage shed? Good thing it wasn't anything important! Keep things going at this pace and the victim will be able give testimony in the trial as an adult!  (Nov 25, 2008 | post #2)

Homestead Rd.

....LOL.....Larry I'd bet there are a couple dozen intersections like that in this town. That one is pretty bad. The town still has streets they reported were to be paved in 2008 that weren't. I'll be surprised if much isn't done due to the limited funds. If I were the County and Town Board I'd probably hold onto every dime I could - it's going to get pretty rough in the next couple years with everything under the sun being bailed out - except anything in Nevada.  (Nov 25, 2008 | post #2)

China plans $871b economic stimulus

Now that their exports to us have slowed, they need to do something with their population. I'm hoping they don't decide to cut down or out of buying our Treasury Bonds! Second only to Japan, they are the biggest foreign buyers of them. If they put a halt to them, we are BROKE - END OF GAME! We don't have the money to reimburse them without printing more up. Keep your fingers crossed.  (Nov 9, 2008 | post #1)

Editor Statement

An unincorporated town of 35,000 an hour west of Las Vegas over the Spring Mountains on the California-Nevada border. At an elevation of 2800 feet, considered 'high desert'. Known for its clean air, clean clear water (140' below ground), its legal brothels, Yucca Mountain in its back yard, and a large retirement community. Our small community has 30 or so bars & casinos, 3-stop lights, 8-fuzzy TV channels, and 2-newspapers. The larger bi-weekly paper is published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the weekly paper is published by Joe Richards, a local brothel owner. One is quite selective in scope and one isn't. Very seldom do they spell out both sides of a story, and that's what we'll attempt.
