Where is the City of Alameda targeting to generate revenue?
Alameda is putting too much emphasis on retail sales tax. Better to put emphasis on business-to-busine ss sales tax - the one bright spot in the recent sales tax reports - which grows exponentially with population growth, density and traffic in Alameda. Alameda will never be an Emeryville... http://actionalame da.org/actionalame danewsblog/2009/09 /17/alameda-theate r-still-not-delive ring-on-retail-sal es-tax-promise/ (Sep 24, 2009 | post #1)

Alameda Unified School District to Finally Investigate Alameda ...
AUSD Board President Mike McMahon promised to have this investigated, and a report back from the AUSD CFO to the AUSD board in the first quarter of 2009. The quarter close is drawing near, and no report yet. (Mar 17, 2009 | post #2)
Projectionists union pickets the Alameda Theatre
It's correct - digital doesn't need as much work. And this union has proposed to Alameda Entertainment Associates (AEA), the operator of the Alameda Theater, to include language that cuts back on staffing in the event they go digital. But Kyle Conner, AEA owner, still won't talk to the union. It's unlikely that AEA will go digital anytime soon - if he wanted to go digital, he would have invested in digital projection when the theaters opened a year ago. (Mar 11, 2009 | post #2)
Alameda Theater and Parking Garage Still Not Throwing-off Promi...
Yea, but the bonds issued to fund the theater/parking garage, and other redevelopment projects are diverted $3.79 million from the general fund last year, and the theater/garage are not contributing any retail sales tax revenue to replace it. Would you rather have easy parking downtown? Or firefighters that can come to your burning house? (Mar 7, 2009 | post #6)

Alameda Theater and Parking Garage Still Not Throwing-off Promi...
Er, no... it's not just the economy. The Alameda district around the parking garage and theater is not growing its share of sales tax revenue relative to the rest of Alameda. One would expect that it would. What's happening, and the Alameda CFO spoke a little to this at last night's council meeting, is that the sales tax revenue is basically flat, but the mix around the theater is shifting to restaurants and away from merchandise. The reality is that total taxable spending in Alameda each year is about $500 million, and that number isn't changing, regardless of the theater and parking garage. (Mar 4, 2009 | post #2)
Actually, as we understand it, the firefighters refused to endorse "Measure P" because although the City sold it on the basis of "protect vital services" and presented images of a firefighters helmet and a police officers hat, NONE of that money is reserved for public safety. Consequently, we hear that the CITY, not the firefighters, are working to put another parcel tax on the ballot this June, specifically tied to public safety. Measure P was a lie. Oakland Closing Smaller Schools - Should Alameda do the Same?
That's beside the point - the question is about how efficient the schools can be. AUSD is facing a severe money crisis, and it may get worse if Measure H is overturned in court. Where will the savings come from? Smaller schools are more expensive than larger schools on a per-student basis to operate. (Oct 2, 2008 | post #2)
$679 Million for Infrastructure at Alameda Point
The $679 million doesn't appear to cover the expenses to create BRT lanes from the development through Alameda and Oakland, (I think SunCal said that was about $90 million at the last ARRA meeting) and certainly not the expense for PRT from Alameda Point to BART, perhaps $60 million. (Say, 3 to 4 miles at about $20 million per mile - the $12 to $15 million/mile estimate for the first PRT in California is dangerously low.) (Sep 24, 2008 | post #3)
Planning Board Hearing On Orchard Supply Hardware
Alameda's share of sales tax is 1% - even if we were able to capture all of the estimated $41 million in leakage per year, that translates only to about $410,000 per year. Not nearly enough to make up for auto-row. Rather than bringing in more retail, Alameda's leaders need to figure out how to bring in jobs and businesses that generate business-to-busine ss revenue. http://actionalame da.org/actionalame danewsblog/2008/06 /28/megaplex-not-t he-solution-to-cit ys-financial-woes- that-some-say/ (Jul 5, 2008 | post #3)
Yes, it's an issue. There are currently no plans to add additional access points from Alameda to Oakland, yet there are plans for as many as 2000 or more new homes going up on Alameda Point at the old Naval Air Station. The local papers, Alameda Journal and Alameda Sun, tend to minimize the problem in their reporting. But you could also try the Oakland Tribune, www.alamedadailyne ws.com (send Don an email) and you can read what some folks in the community are doing about development at www.actionalameda. org (Jan 2, 2008 | post #2)
