Through the many years that I've kept my mouth shut and my ears open, I've been surprised to find the grandiose levels people have evaluated themselves above. These are people who come from a wide swath of life. I don't believe that a lack of education guarantees that a person is "stupid" , just the same as I don't believe that an Ivy League education guarantees that a person has an above average intelligence. It is possible that that given person had above average "silver spoons". On the other hand, a lack of education doesn't guarantee a pure intelligence either. I've seen people who were truly gifted, but their priorities were more grounded. I've also seen people who were "stupid" who thought they were God's gift to humanity. In my experience it seems the people who know the most are humbled by their knowledge, feeling that they have only begun to scratch the surface. On the other hand, the ones who know the least feel empowered by the little that they know simply because it's more than their neighbour knows. In this small superiority, they are "king of the mountain" and they have bragging rights for all eternity, or until someone humiliates them - which of course will not teach a lesson because with humiliation comes a rebound assault of "Go ahead, make my day". Sometimes it seems that "bragging rights" comes more with attitude than with fact. Almost anyone can convince someone that they are worth listening to simply because they are so confident about what they say. That's a disappointing fact because there are some amazing minds out there that are ignored only because they don't have the attitude that makes the difference. They're smart, but who cares? It's a long-shot, but it reminds me of the movie "Medicine Man". Possibilities are wiped out before they are ever given a chance to have a voice. There are amazing people out there who could make a difference, but they will never be heard. In the meantime, we put up with whatever the media thrusts to the forefront as the "icon du jour" to speak in behalf of all mankind. It doesn't matter that they claim, "Hey, I only work here." - everybody thinks they "know". So how does one determine who is worth giving serious thought to, and who is not?
