Oh my goodness, this is definitely a trend within Social Networking sites of which Online Dating sites are niche group. I have both experienced those sort of spammy notes from single men and hear from single male internet dating coach clients of how they, too, are being approached with this kind of scam. There are a few flags for this and you do want to be careful, safe, and protect yourself online. 1. Never give out your personal information to someone you have not met yet in person 2. Look for fully developed online dating profiles 3. Be very wary of first note contact which gives you their email address and Instant Messenger IDs, asking you to contact with them offsite of the Internet Dating site immediately 4. Be very wary of their giving your their phone number in the first or second note exchange And certainly keep in mind that the goal of internet dating is to actually go on more dates and meet more singles. Do vet them a bit, and then make arrangements to meet as soon as possible within reason, face to face. It's so funny that OKCupid (a great online dating website for singles, btw) ran this survey because this is definitely something which I teach to single men and single women in my Online Dating seminars in Las Vegas. It is absolutely true, correct and helpful to write at least a few sentences in your first note to someone at an internet dating site. Write something specific to them, not just a prefab "ice breaker." Make it evident that you read their profile and responded to them in particular, not just all the blondes in Los Angeles. that is so wise to do. their having ignored those signs is just such a strong indicator that the sales people they hire are kids who are unseasoned sales professionals.
