No job? No money? No clean air? No problem.
Hey, I didn't say those parks were perfect little pieces of heaven. I was merely responding to the statement that Chicago doesn't have many parks. 550+ seems like plenty. And, like anything else, some *are* lovely, while some are less so. (Thursday Sep 18 | post #205)

You know Chicago has over 550 parks, right? (Thursday Sep 18 | post #18)
City to step up enforcement of bike laws
I have yet to see/hear of any enforcement of the rules. As someone who drives (rarely), cycles (nearly every day) and walks (all the time), I wish rules would be enforced. Even if a ticket isn't issued, just having those people who are breaking the laws and/or endangering others stopped and inconvenienced for a few minutes might be helpful. And, while drivers and cyclists are the most cited offenders, could someone please talk to all the early morning pedestrians downtown who think it's okay to wait their turn to cross in the street, often in the bike lane (or even beyond) who then get pissy when cyclists go through green lights and come a little near them? There are *side*walks, people. As a cyclist, I do not use them. As a pedestrian, please *do* use them instead of standing in my path! Let's all be considerate of each other. Friendly to planet, rude to diners
But the responsibility always lies with someone else, doesn't it? If everyone just looked after themselves and cleaned up after themselves, it would be a non-issue. And I do understand what you'rs saying; I am constantly appalled at how dirty people think it is okay to be in public . It just seems like college is a good time to learn to be responsible for one's own actions and one's own mess. (Sunday Sep 7 | post #50)
City to step up enforcement of bike laws
It's not a matter of becoming "safety experts." It's more about being aware of others beyond yourself and of being aware and responsible if you *do* hurt someone else. And, for the record, she wasn't even crossing the street. She was standing on the corner, on the sidewalk, waiting for the light to change! (Sunday Sep 7 | post #198)
City to step up enforcement of bike laws
When a pedestrian *is* struck by a bike, what is their recourse? A friend of mine was recently knocked over by two women on bikes. While she struggled to get their bikes off her, they asked each other if they were okay and complained about the car they swerved to avoid, completely ignoring her. Her legs and arms are full of cuts and bruises and her feet and ankles are swollen to the point that she can't wear shoes. Yet, they just picked up their bikes, muttered "sorry," and sped off again. I ride my bike when I can, use public transportation, and drive once in a while. I agree with those who have pointed out that, for the most part, all three of these groups fail to pay attention to the others and only look out for themselves. What happened to the lessons we learned in kindergarten about paying attention to others and being responsible for our own actions and how they affect the world around us? Friendly to planet, rude to diners
I don't understand this. In your home, do you eat on a tray or is your table completely filthy because you spill everywhere and don't wipe it up. Use some common sense and table manners and all should be well. I am assuming that most college students are grown, not 3-year-olds. (Saturday Sep 6 | post #37)
Friendly to planet, rude to diners
Why don't students who want a tray just bring their own? Drop it back off in your room when you're done eating. No big deal. (Saturday Sep 6 | post #3)
Lost cartoon DVD puts patron in library exile
A search of Amazon.com this morning does not reveal this dvd for sale as one disc. Did she perhaps find a used copy being sold second-hand through Amazon? Please be responsible with your library items; if you leave them in a public space, they could get stolen. You share these items with your neighbors and every one of us must accept responsibility for those items we have borrowed. (Aug 25, 2008 | post #11)
City to step up enforcement of bike laws
As someone who became a cyclist this summer, I am glad the laws will be enforced. I can't tell you how often other cyclists have yelled at me for stopping at a red light (which I *always* do since I would like to stay alive, thank you very much). Heck, last week, one of them blew past me screaming that the laws were only for cars. Ack! I think the number of responsible cyclists outweighs those who believe they are above the law, but who notices those of us who follow the rules? (For the record, I am not blameless. I have been known to roll through some stop signs if no other vehicles or pedestrians are around - I do always slow down and look all ways first, though.) I would also like to see motorists who are nasty to cyclists cited. On more than one occasion, I have had cars "pinch" me almost off the rode, even though I always ride as close to the curb as I can. One woman screamed at me to get off the street so she could get to work last week even though I was in the bike lane and she was cutting me off so she could drive there! Several times a week, I encounter cars and trucks parked in bike lanes on busy streets, forcing me to swerve into a "regular " lane (always looking first - remember, I like to breathe) and sometimes pissing off cars who then have to slow down. No one is blameless - not motorists, cyclists, or pedestrians. It is unfortunate that we cannot remember the lessons we learned in kindergarten about treating other people the way we hope to be treated and of being thoughtful of each other. Until we reach that point, maybe a few tickets will remind us of basic decency and keep more of us alive. (Aug 22, 2008 | post #143)
Under the 'L,' Wabash turns a new corner
Really? Well over 1000 City workers are expected to be laid off, but there's an extra $23 million sitting around for flowers? More lighting for saftey, fine. That makes sense. But for flowers and paint? Wow. (Aug 18, 2008 | post #34)
1 dead, 3 injured in shooting outside Chicago Heights bar
Never mind; they updated the article to include the name/location of the bar. Strange that it was missing in the first draft of the story... (Jul 27, 2008 | post #17)

Kids get free back-to-school checkups, supplies on W. Side
What, exactly, is wrong with helping kids in less fortunate circumstances start the school year with a clean bill of health and a few basic supplies? Most of them will not have the same opportunities as the children of those who have good paying jobs. Whether their parents are working two jobs to barely make ends meet or are sitting at home all day or out hustling on the street... None of that is, in any way, the fault or responsibility of the children. Don't we want all kids to have the best chance they can have to find success in school? It's bad enough that schools in poorer neighborhoods already struggle to retain good teachers and have current textbooks and equipment. Now some of you want to deny kids the chance to have a few new supplies, too? I sincerely hope that, should you ever fall upon hard times, other people are kinder to your children than you would be to these kids. (Jul 26, 2008 | post #6)
