In order to try to clear the air a little about the retirement of Chief Mike Worthen. Mr. Worthen offered to go ahead and take retirement in order to save the City from having to layoff one less officer. And if the promotion comes from within the current police force it would had a much larger impact on the depts. budget. The way it is right now we stand to lose at least two officers due to the cut backs to balance the budget at this time. Mr. Worthen felt that it would be the best for the dept. so he suggested the early retirement in order to save the job of one of the younger officers. And for the rumor that there is an Ordinance committee meeting to change the law so that the new chief can be chosen from outside of the city limits of Metropolis is just not true. The law the way it is right now clearly states that an officer or a dept. head does not have to live within the city limits. So should the Mayor choose a person that lives outside of Metropolis he may be chosen and approved to fill the job opening. (However if the mayor does bring us a name that does not or does not plan on moving into the city limits I will have to vote against the appointment no matter how good of a person is and even if he would make us an excellent chief due to the fact I believe that if you want to work for the City of Metropolis then you should live in the city. I feel that when the council gave that away it was a big mistake) So with that being said and if the Mayor’s choice is an outsider I will vote against the appointment. I find it hard to believe that the great people of Topix knows who the Mayor has chosen when this has only been talked to in a closed session and what is talked about in closed session has to stay closed for reasons. I say to you to check out your source of information before just posting that you know for a fact that Mr. X is getting the job, besides the Mayor has the right to change his mind and appoint someone else at the last minute. I have spoken to the owner of Wily Jaks and she states that she want to rebuild and reopen Wily Jaks but she is still waiting in the insurance company to decide just how much coverage they will pay for the damages. The members of the Band and their parents all worked very hard to EARN THE MONEY, and what they do with the money that the EARNED is up to them. On the agenda the committee is scheduled to "Discuss and take possible action on insurance options" This is to talk about the health insurance (yes the health insurance for the Aldermen) as requested by Alderman Brown. Also the committee is to "Discuss and take possible action on budget items" That is where the committee will talk about farther cuts to other areas (like Fire protection, Parks and recreation, water, street and light departments as well as the Police Department) of the city's budget in order to attempt to balance the city's budget.
