Vatican Keeps Parish Records From Mormons

That's a bit of closing the barn door after the horse has left. The LDS already has most of the pre 1900 Catholic Church records for major USA cities and Europe. They microfilmed then in the 1960s and 1970s. Plus, a second Baptism or Sealing shouldn't matter The deceased can reject the Latter Day Baptism themselves -- if the Church truly believes its own teaching on Free Will.  (May 4, 2008 | post #1)

How should the US deal with Illegal Immigration?

They tell me this is how the Nazi party got into power. They blamed one group for all their economic troubles, arrested parents and children, and locked them into work camps. They killed them all as their final solution. You just want to deport them with the clothes on their backs after months of jail. What happened to WWJD? When did all you good Christians become the crowd cheering on the lions? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  (Apr 11, 2008 | post #11504)

Palatine Considers Leaving Cook Co. Over Tax Hike

Check your facts as to who gave us the $160 billion-plus deficit. September 27, 2000 : CNN White House Correspondent Kelly Wallace WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Clinton announced Wednesday that the federal budget surplus for fiscal year 2000 amounted to at least $230 billion, making it the largest in U.S. history and topping last year's record surplus of $122.7 billion. February 5, 2008 : Peter G. Gosselin, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer WASHINGTON -- White House budget director Jim Nussle acknowledged that the federal deficit will double from $162 billion in fiscal 2007, which ended last September, to more than $400 billion in both fiscal 2008 and 2009. He attributed the increase entirely to the fiscal stimulus plan that Bush and House leaders have agreed on to help the economy  (Mar 10, 2008 | post #7)

Roman Catholic church only true church, says Vatican

I really think the Catholic Church would benefit by creating sub-labels -- orthodox, conservative and reform -- so people like Elizabeth(OH) don't feel forced to leave the Church. However, don't fault the Pope for acting like "God's Representative on Earth for matters of Church doctrine." That's exactly what the Pope -- chosen by God's Divine direction in conclave – is supposed to do. The Pope is the embodiment of Orthodoxy. He's defines the ultimate doctrine Catholics must believe to be members of the Catholic Church. He is the hardliner. He's not supposed to make nice with other religions so they'll like Catholics. He's supposed to see to it that Catholics follow God's law and get into heaven.  (Feb 27, 2008 | post #13901)

You can't pick-n-choose when you want a fetus to be a child. I had a stillbirth at the beginning of the ninth month. (She was growing with the umbilical cord around her neck.) If the government really thought my fetus was a child from the moment of conception, I could have claimed her as a child deduction on my income tax. (The IRS also owns me a refund for my other children conceived in one year and born the next.) You can't get life insurance for a fetus; you can't open a savings account or college fund for a fetus; you can't do anything legal for that fetus that you can do for a child until the fetus is physically born. And if religions really thought a fetus was a child, they would be dedicated to God in the womb and stillbirths would have a funeral service as a member of the church. Didn't happen, so they obviously didn't think my fetus/stillbirth was a real child.  (Feb 27, 2008 | post #122)

Florida will teach evolution but only as theory

>> Flying Spaghetti Monster LOL I always thought the pictures of the turtle with the world on it's back were cute. And then there's Atlas holding up the world. I'm sure we can come up lots more theories from every religion, even the extinct ones. The whole discussion seems circular to me: God created evolution so that species evolve.  (Feb 20, 2008 | post #168)

2008 Presidential Election

Analysis: Clinton has one last chance

Hillary will stay in the race because there is some power in building the pre-convention platform when you have 40% of the delegates on the first vote. But I doubted a year ago that the media would put Hilary in a favorable light. Fair or not, Hilary is much better news as the witch who ran the Clinton White House than as the first woman president. Perhaps the media figures when the vote comes between a black and white man, everyone's racism will kick in and McCain gets the prize.  (Feb 20, 2008 | post #22)

Obama, McCain Win Wisconsin Primaries

The media controls the soundbites -- they dictate what the rest of us see and our preception of the candidates. The Clintons have forgotten that and have stopped sucking up to the media. Is there a doctor in the house?

People are being given a choice between a $25 copay and waiting an hour-plus to see their doctor vs. a $15 OTC test purchased in 10 minutes and taken at home. If they're uncertain something is wrong, people take the cheaper & faster option. If clinical preventative medicine is the key, then Health Care Insurance and Providers need to decrease the copay and the price of medication to encourage early detection via office visits and simplify medicinal maintenance.  (Feb 19, 2008 | post #2)

Wikipedia defies 180,000 demands to remove images of the Prophet

>> According to a FBI report, in the year 1990, every day on an average 1756 cases of rape were committed in U.S.A alone. The statistics don't show an increase in rape but an increase in the REPORTING of rape -- because every year we push aside our old notion that "she's a slut who was asking for it" and recognise that the rape victim WAS A VICTIM. We're learning not to blame the victim or their family members. We're making it easier for a victim to report what happened. We condem family members who take the law into their own hands and exact blood revenge. (How many innocent men have been killed on suspicion rather than proof?) And we recognize that men need to learn self-control. A woman's face or bare arm should not make a man think only of sex with her. It's a face; it's just skin. Don't blame your inability to control your lust on the woman.  (Feb 19, 2008 | post #609)

New suburban rail line depends on state matching federal aid, M...

Jake in MA said: the Chicago area is in a good position to take advantage of the need for high density and transit. Reply: I travel 20 miles every morning to my job. The Chicago Metro area is already too big for a bus-based system to work. The Chicago Metro area is 40 miles wide from Chicago to Aurora and 75 miles high from Zion IL (on the WI border) to Gary IN. Like many people, I travel 20+ miles every morning to my job. The Chicago Metro area is already too big for a regional on-road bus-based system to work. And the only way to expand the off-road train system is to tear down people's homes. The Chicago RTA was created in 1974; the suburban PACE system in 1983. Neither has run in the black. They balance their budget with rate increases, shutting down lines in the poorest economic parts of the City (where they are needed the most) and begging the state and feds for bail-out money. Look at this January's news reports. We just went through a round of RTA bankruptcy threats to cover their mismanagement shortfall. Stop looking for all-encompasing solutions -- think locally. The silver lining sometimes occurs when a suburban city or two combine tax dollars and create a local bus system on their main streets to the local business district and malls. Something like the neighborhood bus systems Chicago had 50 years ago, before the RTA. It won't help me getting to work, but it will for going to the library, the park district, the community college, etc.  (Feb 18, 2008 | post #7)

Same problem with extending I-53 north to Wisconsin and building the next collar expressway from IL-47 (west of Elgin/Geneva/Batavia). Lake and Kane counties need a massive road building program to go along with the housing construction in those areas. We may be in a recession now but we won't be forever.  (Feb 15, 2008 | post #3)

Immigration Reform

How should the US deal with Illegal Immigration?

gzeena: Whites may be a minority where you are in TX, but they're still 70+% of the overall US population. Check out the last census report at http://www.census. gov/prod/2001pubs/ c2kbr01-1.pdf As for 'marque dos por espanol', my German and Polish grandparents lived in Milwaukee in 1900 and never needed to speak English to anyone. Local storekeepers and their job manager were foreign-born, too. Their children were bilingual and their grandchilden are English-only. I expect the same will happen to the Latino community.  (Feb 14, 2008 | post #8706)

Sex offender convicted of window peeping

The wife testified she’d gotten out of the bath and dressed by 10:40 p.m. but the 911 call came in around 11:30 p.m. There'd be no way I could convict of lewd conduct with that time evidence if "beyond a reasonable doubt" was required in the jury deliberation. But it wasn't. Moral of the story : If you're going to creep around in the bushes when you have a sex assault conviction you're "I wasn't doing anything" credibilty is gone.  (Feb 14, 2008 | post #3)
