Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration has pledged a more than $135 million incentive package to South African energy company Sasol Ltd. to build a $21 billion complex in southwest Louisiana to turn natural gas into chemicals, diesel and other fuels. Officials with the state and Sasol Ltd. gathered Friday to break ground on the first phase of the company's $8 billion petrochemical complex outside Lake Charles. Comment?

Westlake High School senior Sarah Marino has been named an I-SWEEEP finalist and grand prize winner at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair, held March 7. Her medal-winning research was one of four projects selected to go on to compete at the International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, or I-SWEEEP, in Houston in May. The I-SWEEEP competition focuses on energy, engineering and the environment with the goal of advancing the awareness of sustainability. It is the largest science fair of its kind. Comment?

Construction is underway on an $8.1-billion ethane cracking plant after its owner, Sasol Ltd., in January delayed a decision to invest in a neighboring project estimated to cost up to $14 billion. Crews for three construction contractors are now performing site preparation, piling and foundation work on the Westlake, La., site while four other contractors have been awarded contracts for later mobilization.
