U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., and community leaders joined Google on Friday for the formal opening of its new, $600 million data center in The Dalles. The 164,000-square-foot addition, enabled by a package of tax exemptions approved in 2013, brings Google's total investment in the Wasco County project to $1.2 billion. Comment?

Oregon's latest land rush is for sites for data centers, those pulsing troves of digital information used by companies like Amazon and Facebook to store your emails and cat photos. As Mike Rogoway reported last weekend , Oregon's passage of a law that gives sought-after tax treatment to large, out-of-state technology firms could spark "a new building boom among big data center operators."
