    Office Depot closing stores in Newport News and Norfolk

    Office Depot Inc. confirmed it is closing its 11971 Jefferson Ave. store in Newport News and a Norfolk store on May 16. "The overlapping retail footprint created by the merger of Office Depot and OfficeMax last year provides us a unique opportunity to consolidate and optimize our store portfolio, while maintaining the retail presence needed to serve our customers," spokeswoman Sarah England said in an email. England said the company closed 165 stores last year and plans to close another 100 by the second quarter of this year.
