There was a time not so long ago when shopping for a new car or truck automatically meant a cruise down the south end of Abercorn where dealerships dotted the landscape for miles. While some longtime dealers were still holding on to their original locations away from Abercorn Street, they had become few and far Backus Cadillac/Pontiac remained on East Victory Drive, where it had been for more than half a century until it closed in 2009. Central Payment Co., based in San Rafael, has been forced to pay $51,860 in back wages and damages to 18 of its current and former San Rafael employees, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Central Payment, which was founded in 2006 by twin brothers Matthew and Zachary Hyman, failed to pay some employees who worked more than 40 hours during a work week time-and one-half overtime as required by law, according to a statement issued by Susana Blanco, director of the Department of Labor's San Francisco division.
