    The want and the know how were on opposite ends of the spectrum for the Webster City volleyball team Tuesday night. Everyone on the Webster City sideline wanted to win a second straight North Central Conference volleyball championship and a third title in the past four years.

    That's the scenario that the Webster City and South Hamilton cross country programs face heading into today's state qualifying meets, but neither is shying away from the underdog role. Seth Crouthamel and Connor Foster will be in the Webster City lineup at today's Class 3A state qualifier in Perry.

    Parks was a 6-foot-2, 215-pound galloping train when he played for the Lynx, a career that ended in 2011 with a school-record 3,409 rushing yards. He had power and he had speed - lots and lots of speed that transferred over to the track where he won Class 3A 100- and 200-meter state titles in the spring of 2012.

    It was the race the Webster City boys' cross country team wanted to run, and in the end that was enough to satisfy the crew and head coach Tony Bussan. Tactically strong from the starter's pistol to the finish line, the Lynx met their own expectations Tuesday evening during the North Central Conference meet at Sheldon Park.

    Fierce at net and in control throughout, the Webster City volleyball team went on the road and disposed of Clear Lake in three sets, 25-18, 25-20, 25-18, Tuesday night. The Lynx fourth straight victory and third consecutive North Central Conference win put them on the doorstep of a repeat league championship and a third title in the past four years.

    New roles don't bother Lynx spikers in sweep of Garr...

    Even without its offensive architect, the Webster City volleyball team continued its late-season surge here Thursday evening with its second straight victory over a ranked opponent and third consecutive win overall. Setter Taylor Schnathorst missed the match because of an illness, but Gianna Gourley - the team's starting libero all season - stepped in and distributed 38 assists in the Lynx 3-0 victory over former North Central Conference rival and 13th-ranked Algona Bishop Garrigan.

    Lynx defense still keyed on Ross despite numbers

    Make no mistake, Brady Ross is one of the best football players in Class 3A and numbers aren't going to change that fact. Thought to be a lock for an all-state spot in the backfield prior to the start of the season, Ross, a Humboldt senior, hasn't piled up the statistics of the past two years, and yet Webster City head coach Bob Howard says he's still the guy the Lynx must stop tonight when the Class 3A District 2 rivals collide at 7:30 p.m. Ross chewed up 2,629 yards of ground real estate and scored 35 touchdowns in 2012 and 2013, ending both years in the 3A top 10 in rushing yards.
