    No winners at all in District 7-AAA tourney fiasco

    It was between the Riverdale and Smyrna girls basketball team, which faced off in the consolation round of the District 7-AAA tournament. We've long heard of it before, a team trying in a round-about way to throw a basketball game in order to avoid another opponent in a region tournament.

    High school basketball tournaments have been disrupted by bad weather and downright marred by the double-tanking of the District 7-AAA girls' consolation game in Rutherford County. As you probably have heard , Riverdale and Smyrna deliberately tried to lose the game last Saturday so as not to be placed in the same bracket as defending state and national champion Blackman in an elimination game in the Region 4-AAA tournament.

    Wow, what a week in girls high school basketball in the Midstate. A mockery, a travesty, an embarrassment are just a few terms I have read this week about the district tournament game between Riverdale and Smyrna on Saturday.

    Monday afternoon, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association suspended each team, ending their seasons and ultimately giving them what they strived to accomplish Saturday. "You can't make a mockery of the game.

    Basketball teams caught trying to lose

    A pair of Tennessee girls basketball high school teams have been pulled from the postseason for trying to lose a game to avoid the top-ranked team and improve their chances of advancing to the state tournament.

    District Tournaments Set

    District basketball tournaments, delayed and postponed due to the ice storm, will resume. First up with be the Central Lady Tigers vs. Cannon County Thursday night at 7:30pm in the 8-AA girls championship.

    The Smyrna girls forced Stewarts Creek to 20-turnovers and defeat the Lady Hawks 61-48. The Lady Bulldogs won both regular season games by two-points each time.

    There are four Rutherford County prep basketball teams playing this week for a spot in the upcoming TSSAA Blue Cross Basketball Championships. Tonight , the defending AAA state and national champion Blackman Lady Blaze will host Cumberland County.
