    The season got off to a rocky start for the Bethune-Cookman University softball team, losers of its first five games, 11 of its first 15 and 17 of its first 24. That all changed with the beginning of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on April 3 - and leadoff hitter Calesha Shelley going on an absolute tear. The Wildcats have gone 8-1 in MEAC with Shelley, an Armijo High graduate, batting .588 with 16 runs scored and 13 steals in as many attempts.

    Around the Horn: Foothill softball beats Granada

    The Foothill High softball team stayed hot with a 3-1 win over Granada on April 16, the Falcons' seventh straight win and third in a row to begin league play. Junior Megan Shackley slugged a solo home run in the first inning for Foothill, and Nalani Scates struck out five and scattered nine hits to improve to 11-2 on the season.

    The San Ramon Valley High baseball team exploded for three runs in the top of the seventh inning Friday against host California, and the Wolves needed all three in a 5-4 East Bay Athletic League win. California's Jake Ackerman slammed a two-run triple with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded as San Ramon Valley pitching ace Joey Matulovich got the final two outs for a complete-game victory.

    Monte Vista High's baseball team won't soon forget the win that gave it sole possession of first place in the East Bay Athletic League. The Mustangs showed off their no-quit attitude, rallying back from two late deficits to stun surging California 8-7 in extra innings Wednesday in Danville.

    The California baseball team continued its strong season by upending College Park 4-0 in the championship game of the Elite 8 Invitational on April 9. Junior right-hander Liam Steigerwald pitched 62/3 strong innings, allowing no runs and four hits, striking out four and walking two. The Grizzlies, who improved to 9-3 overall, scored all four runs in the second inning as Matt Haworth and Matt Ramirez had RBIs.

    Consider that the EBAL's eight teams were a combined 65-29 overall heading into the week: Not one team was worse than 7-5. "It's gonna be a meat grinder," Granada coach Corrigan Willis said of the league competition remaining.
