    Lake Park puts it all together against Glenbard East

    No one on the Lake Park softball team would complain if the Lancers played every game like they did during Tuesday's 5-2 win over Glenbard East at The Rosemont Dome. That's because it was like a good receipe with just the right amount of ingredients -- solid pitching, defense and hitting.

    But Vikings coach Phil Ralston said it was “absolutely” extra gratifying considering what Geneva had to do to make it. The Vikings faced a highly rigorous postseason path; all seven of the teams they faced, beginning with DeKalb in a regional semifinal, exceeded 20 wins on the season.

    BATAVIA – The Batavia girls soccer team was supposed to come off the practice pitch at 4:15 p.m. It didn't. Instead, coach Mark Gianfrancesco's squad stayed out in the biting wind for another half hour to meticulously work on through-balls and set pieces.

    Hawks Drop Pair at Lake County

    In the first game, Harper tied the game at 2-2 on Jessica McCabe 's RBI double in the sixth inning. However, the Lancers won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Kayla Uhwat.

    Geneva survives Lake Park in double overtime

    After 52 years, Geneva's basketball team was forced to play an extra 8 minutes before finally outlasting Lake Park 57-52 in double overtime to win Tuesday night's Class 4A supersectional in DeKalb. With the victory, the Vikings matched their single-season school record for wins and advanced to Friday night's 4A state semifinals against Normal at the Peoria Civic Center.

    Road to the sectional: Lake Park beat Hoffman Estates 50-33, Grayslake North 54-50, Palatine 38-32 and St. Viator 58-39. Geneva beat DeKalb 66-52, St. Charles East 73-70, Rockford Jefferson 63-54 and Rockford Auburn 65-62.

    Crowds filling in for surging Geneva boys basketball...

    A combination of relatively distant postseason venues and the school's more ingrained football culture made for some sparse Vikings turnouts in postseasons of the recent past. Coach Phil Ralston recalled a “skeleton crew” of student support during what proved to be a thrilling regional at Wheaton Warrenville South during the 2012-13 season, when the Vikings upset Hinsdale Central before narrowly falling to West Aurora in the final.
