    Portland's "Turkey Day Streaker" revisited

    On Thanksgiving Day, fourteen years ago in 2000, a teenaged Jon DiDonato stood shivering in an obscure corner of the west end of Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland, under the shadow of Hadlock Field. Roughly ten thousand people had shown up for that year's annual Thanksgiving Day football game between storied crosstown rivals Portland High and Deering High.

    Has Four Classes Benefitted Maine High School Football?

    With the presentation of four gold balls during this past frigid weekend, the 2014 Maine high school football season came to a close. It also marked the second season the state's football playing schools have competed under the four classification system.

    Cheverus High seeking fourth regional football title...

    The only team separating Cheverus High School from its fourth regional title in the last five years is the only team to defeat the Stags this year, the Windham Eagles. And Windham's 35-7 beating of Cheverus in Week 4 - which ended the Stags' 36-game regular-season unbeaten streak - was decisive, as the Eagles countered an early 7-0 deficit with 35 unanswered points.

    Sports briefs for Nov. 12, 2014

    The state's best high school soccer players will battle on Sunday at Hampden Academy's soccer complex when the East and West senior all-star games for boys and girls will be held during the 20th annual Maine Soccer Coaches Senior Bowl. Players named to a Maine Soccer Coaches regional all-star team are invited to compete in the games with the girls game set for noon, followed by the boys game at 2:30 p.m. Players will be invited to the game by their coaches and should arrive for check-in one hour before game time.
