The South Thomaston resident, who has coached off and on at every age group for four decades in the Midcoast, has been diagnosed with stage four cancer, which began in his esophagus and eventually spread to his liver. Stage four cancer is described as when the cancer spreads from its site of origin to other organs and is no longer curable. Comment?

Portland and Deering's softball teams are both hoping for bigger and better things this spring and in Wednesday afternoon's season opener at Kiley Field, it's clear that both squads have reason for optimism. The Bulldogs took advantage of early Rams' mistakes to open up a 7-0 lead after four innings, but Deering roared back with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth and came inches away from tying it up. As an undergraduate at the University of Maine, Ed Kohtala was a manager and practice player for the men's basketball team who tried twice unsuccessfully to earn a roster spot. That inability to earn a Black Bears' jersey was a personal disappointment of his own playing days that no doubt added to Kohtala's level of compassion for current players at Bangor High School as he told them Thursday of his decision to step down as the Rams' boys varsity coach after three seasons. Comment?
