The Wildcats were within minutes of becoming the first girls team from central Ohio to reach the Division I championship game since 2000, but West Chester Lakota West made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to pull out a 53-50 victory on Friday night at Value City Arena.

When: Semifinals start with Solon and Toledo Notre Dame at 6 p.m. on Friday, with Lakota West and Newark starting at 8 p.m. The Division I state championship is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Solon: The Comets are in their first state tournament since 2006, which is the only other time the program has been to state.

    Girls basketball: Two from area are all-Ohio first team

    Gabby Burris of Liberty Union and Jill Blacksten of Newark Catholic were named to the Associated Press all-Ohio teams yesterday in Division III and Division IV, respectively. Burris, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, averaged 21.0 points and 13.8 rebounds in leading Liberty Union to the district semifinal round before losing to Cincinnati Summit Country Day.

    Kym Royster, who has powered Newark to its first state tournament appearance, was selected co-player of the year on the Associated Press Division I all-Ohio girls basketball team. Royster, a 6-foot-2 senior who has signed with Indiana, is averaging 20.1 points and 9.8 rebounds while shooting 64 percent from the field for the Wildcats , who will face West Chester Lakota West in a state semifinal on Friday at Value City Arena.
