    Muskegon All-American Deyonta Davis receives persona...

    Muskegon's Deyonta Davis wouldn't have received his Mr. Basketball trophy Saturday morning at the Breslin Center if he could've had it his way. Davis and Big Reds coach Keith Guy would've preferred to be playing in the Class A state finals, but that didn't stop the Michigan State University signee from cracking a slight smile while being honored on his future court.

    Muskegon can't slow down Trevor Manuel, Lansing Ever...

    The Big Reds, looking to return to the Breslin Center and defend their Class A state title in boys basketball, fell short of their goal with a 75-52 loss to Lansing Everett in state quarterfinal action Tuesday night. Newly crowned Mr. Basketball Deyonta Davis was limited to 12 points for Muskegon while Everett's Trevor Manuel , who finished third in the voting, broke loose for a game-high 24 points as the Vikings pulled away in the second half.

    Congratulations to Muskegon High's Deyonta Davis on being named the 35th recipient of the Hal Shram Mr. Basketball award yesterday afternoon in Detroit. The 6'10" center is headed to Michigan State next year, and Davis is the second player in back to back years to win the award for the Big Reds.

    Muskegon's Deyonta Davis named Mr. Basketball

    A year after former Muskegon guard Deshaun Thrower won the award, 6-foot-10 Big Reds senior forward Deyonta Davis was honored as the 35th recipient of the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award on Monday afternoon at the Detroit Free Press office in Detroit. The award is just one of many honors that Davis, a Michigan State signee has raked in this season, as he was also named Gatorade's Michigan Player of the Year and was selected as Michigan's only McDonald's All-American this season.

    But it's hard to find fault in the success of the area's top teams in boys basketball this year as well. We've got three teams Muskegon , Spring Lake and Shelby playing in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday, one win away from the Breslin Center and the high school's version of the Final Four.

    Muskegon 's 6-foot-10 basketball star was honored in a school assembly Friday afternoon at Redmond-Potter Gymnasium for his honors as a McDonald's All-American, a first for the Muskegon area and this year's lone representative from Michigan. Davis, who is one of three finalists for Mr. Basketball to be announced Monday and also recently received Gatorade Player of the Year honors for Michigan , was presented with a plaque, life-size cutout and a visit from Ronald McDonald.
