    Spring Lake shuts out Reeths-Puffer in girls soccer ...

    The Lakers recorded a 1-0 district-opening win over Reeths-Puffer in their final game in program history at their home field between the Grand River and the middle school, as they will move into a new turf stadium behind the high school next year. Spring Lake advances to play Fruitport , which beat Coopersville 3-1 in its district opener, at Fruitport Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Division 2 district semifinals.

    Grand Haven lost both of its regular-season meetings with rival West Ottawa, by a combined two goals. Could the third time be the charm for the Buccaneers? It's always interesting when the Lakers and Trojans clash, but that would be putting the cart before the horse.

    Western Michigan Christian boys win, Saugatuck hurdl...

    Led by first-place finishes in the 400-meter, 800-meter, 1,600-meter, 800-relay, 1,600-relay, and 3,200 relay races, the Muskegon Western Michigan Christian boys track team won the MITCA Division 4 Team State Championship. In the 400-meter race, Elijah VanderVelde , David Gilson , and Tully Groenendyk finished first, second and fourth for the Warriors.

    As a ninth-grader, he gave a good indication of what was in store on the football field and baseball diamond for his athletic career with the Crusaders. Looking back at his varsity career, he helped MCC to back-to-back Division 8 state titles in football and strong seasons in baseball.

    MUSKEGON, MI In spirited voting, Muskegon Catholic Central's Nick Holt edged Spring Lake 's Jorge Lozano in a MLive.com fan poll asking for the top high school baseball player in Muskegon. The poll was open for a week and closed at noon Wednesday, May 20, and Holt finished with 6,872 votes, good for 33 percent in the poll.

    After back-to-back OK Black conference losses to Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills on May 5 and Zeeland East on May 7, the Reeths-Puffer girls soccer team has regained some ground with a three-game win streak. The Rockets opened their win streak with impressive offensive performances against North Muskegon on May 8 and Grand Rapids Union on May 12. Reeths-Puffer then added a narrow 1-0 win over cross-town rival Mona Shores on May 14. "We played well from start to finish," Tjapkes said.
