    Liberty's youthful roster was unable to keep pace with The Dalles in a 56-40 loss Wednesday in a Class 5A girls basketball play-in game at Liberty High School. The Dalles, which is in the postseason for the sixth season in a row, led 15-9 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 29-15 at halftime.

    The La Salle Falcons could prove tough to stop this playoff season, as the 2014 state 4A girls basketball finalists enter their first year of Class 5A postseason play sporting a 23-1 record, their only loss coming in a 61-57 barnburner with Hermiston, the top-ranked team in Class 5A. An offensive juggernaut, the second-ranked Falcons are averaging an incredible 70 points a game, to just 36 points by their opponents, a 34-point margin of victory.

    Rex Putnam senior Juan Hernandez Jr. did himself, his team, his school and his community proud over the weekend, capturing an individual title at the Oregon Class 5A State High School Wrestling Championships, contested Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum. Hernandez defeated Hillsboro senior Ben Kociemba 7-3 in the 220-pound final, after advancing through two major decisions and an 8-5 decision.

    Rex Putnam High School's ever-improving girls basketball team got it done last Friday, avenging an earlier loss, with a 62-59 win over Sandy in double overtime. It was the fourth win in five league games for the Kingsmen , and the hard fought victory left Putnam tied with Sandy in third place in the Northwest Oregon Conference standings with two conference games remaining.

    With wins over Molalla on Friday, Gladstone High School's varsity boys and varsity girls basketball teams both won outright Tri-Valley Conference league titles. Gladstone boys won 54-53 at Molalla, while Gladstone girls routed the Indians, winning 58-30 in a home game.
