    It might be one of the most worn out cliches in football, but coaches love to tell anybody who will listen that defense wins championships. East Coweta is a long way from bringing home its first state title, but the undefeated Indians can point to their play on the defensive side of the football for the fast start heading into Friday's Region 3-AAAAAA game on the road against Westlake .

    Late rally by Dacula upsets Cats at home

    Apalachee's softball team split a pair of games with a couple of Region 8-AAAAAA teams Wednesday and Thursday at the Lady Wildcats' field to end the regular-season schedule, but Coach Matt Allen has scheduled one more game before tournament play begins. The Lady Cats will travel to Union Grove Thursday for a game with the Lady Wolverines, who blanked Apalachee 9-0 in a preseason scrimmage back on Aug. 11 at the Apalachee field.

    East Coweta hosts Newnan today in region showdown

    For the first time in three tries, Heard County finally got the better of a softball opponent from Coweta in a one-run game. Northgate had the tying run on second base with no outs in the top of the seventh, but couldn't manage to get it home in a 6-5 loss to the Lady Braves, who used a three-run rally in the fifth and a go-ahead run in the sixth to complete a comeback victory at home in a non-region game.

    George McDonald, previously known as the Eagle's Landing punter, has done a fine job so far this season as George McDonald, the Eagle's Landing quarterback. In his debut at the position against Union Grove on Aug. 29, McDonald threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-6 victory.
