    Reed shines at regionals

    The distance runner won three individual events and also helped her team win a relay event as Berkeley Springs put up 98 points behind champion Bridgeport. Journal photo by Jessica Manuel Kinsey Reed of Berkeley Springs won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs and was part of the 4x800 relay at the Class AA, Region II meet.

    Freshman's bunt helps Eagles nip 'Dogs in nine

    Hedgesville's No. 9 hitter, who happens to be a ninth-grader, thought he might get the go-ahead to swing away in the bottom of the ninth inning with runners at first and second base and the Eagles trailing by a run.

    Regional meet feels like home

    No, he didn't click his heels together Dorothy-like from the "Wizard of Oz" and chant, "There's no place like home." The local track teams finally had a legitimate home meet on Thursday for the annual Class AAA, Region II meet hosted by Spring Mills, where Comer is the athletic director, at a stadium that probably has no peer in the Mountain State.

    Top teams in contention at region tennis tourney

    It was a mad dash for the driver's seat during Friday's action in the Class AAA, Region II boys tennis tournament at Jefferson High School. The Jefferson Cougars, Washington Patriots and Martinsburg Bulldogs pulled out in front early into the action and are in contention entering today's championship round.

    Colbert helps keep Cougars on track

    Abby Colbert has made her mark throughout the state of West Virginia as a cross country athlete, including an individual state title back in October. The Jefferson junior had an impressive outing last weekend at the Gazette Relays in Charleston, taking home the high-point award as the top scorer in the girls competition after compiling two first-place finishes and a second-place finish.

    Eagles eliminate Bulldogs

    Holding a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning in the Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 tournament game against the Bulldogs, the Eagles capitalized on mistakes to score five runs on the way to a 9-1 mercy-rule victory in five innings. "We were complacent at the plate and didn't have our frame of mind in getting things started," Hedgesville coach Ben Merica said.
