    Moreau Catholic beats Newark Memorial in basketball

    The Moreau Catholic High boys basketball team entered the season with hopes of accomplishing something it had never done in the program's history -- win a league title. On Friday, the Mariners, the defending North Coast Section Division IV champions and state finalists, took a big step toward that goal by defeating host Newark Memorial 73-54 to take firm control of the Mission Valley Athletic League.

    The Berkeley High girls soccer team scored early in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second half to beat Mt. Eden 2-0 on Jan. 23. Senior Franny Cerny scored in the eighth minute off an assist from Arabelle Schoenberg, then added an assist on Teresa Mesones's goal in the 49th minute.

    Sophomore Damari Milstead had 19 points, including the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds left, as Moreau Catholic edged Archbishop Mitty 68-67 in a thriller between two of the Bay Area's top boys basketball teams at the MLK Classic at Haas Pavilion. Ben Kone had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Mitty, but the junior forward was held scoreless in the fourth quarter when Moreau Catholic's pressure defense created havoc for the Monarchs .
