    Thanks to a strong second half last Friday, Heritage Academy rallied for a 27-16 victory against Leake Academy. The victory helped erase the sting of a 31-7 loss to Pillow Academy and provided a needed confidence boost for the stretch run.

    Houston could provide punch for MSU men

    Entering his third season as Mississippi State's men's basketball coach, Rick Ray hopes this year's newcomers help MSU end its postseason drought. The group includes sharp-shooting guard Maurice Dunlap, a freshman from Greenwood; 6-foot-9 post player Oliver Black, of Jackson Wingfield High School; and junior college transfer Travis Daniels and redshirt freshman Fallou Ndoye, who were on campus a year ago but will take the court for the first time as Bulldogs this season.

    That's the message Columbus coach Randal Montgomery and Heritage Academy coach Barrett Donahoe want their teams to heed at 7 tonight as they prepare to face Greenville and Leake Academy, respectively, in Mississippi High School Activities Association and Mississippi Association of Independent Schools action. For Columbus, tonight's game will have a direct impact on its ability to finish in the top four in the region and earn a playoff spot.

    Despite allowing a back-breaking touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter that dropped it in a 21-point hole at halftime, the Heritage Academy football team found a spark in the third quarter. A Michael Ledbetter 90-yard kickoff for a touchdown to open the second half suggested the final 24 minutes were going to be different.
