The Sailors clinched the OK Gold Conference championship, which was the first goal the team set late last summer.

    Muskegon 37, Reeths-Puffer 6: Quick start propels Bi...

    The Muskegon football team kept its chances for a perfect regular season alive as it rolled crosstown rival Reeths-Puffer 37-6 on a soggy night at Rocket Stadium Friday, Oct. 17. Senior running back Caleb Washington carried the ball 18 times for 141 yards and two touchdowns to pace a balanced Big Reds attack, which rode a quick start to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and 23-0 lead at halftime. The quick start was a welcomed change for Muskegon coach Shane Fairfield.

    It was another rotten Friday for high school football teams along the Lakeshore, with just three of the eight posting victories. Undefeated Zeeland West clinched the OK Green with a 62-21 win at Byron Center, while Holland dumped visiting Hamilton, 40-27, and Fennville kept its playoff hopes alive by surprising the Tigers in Gobles, 22-12.

    Jared Veldheer, who began his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders and initially expressed a desire to stay with the team, returns to Oakland on Sunday as a member of the Arizona Cardinals. Veldheer, a 2005 Forest Hills Northern grad, signed a five-year, $35 million contract in the offseason to anchor left tackle for the Cardinals after the Raiders showed little interest in him as he entered free agency.

    Emotional Northview team gets second-ever playoff berth

    With five wins heading into Friday's matchup with Forest Hills Northern, a Grand Rapids Northview program with only one playoff berth in its history certainly had a lot to play for. To their home crowd's delight, the Wildcats pulled out a wild 43-38 victory and were mobbed by their student section not long after.

    CALEDONIA There was a play that went down early in Caledonia's 33-0 win over Lowell that showed everyone who attended the rainy, windy, cold MLive Grand Rapids Press Game of the Week that Red Arrows coach Noel Dean just wasn't going Lou Holtz after all. Remember when Dean told MLive this past week that he didn't think the Red Arrows had a chance against the Fighting Scots? Well, we all got a big clue in the opening quarter that Caledonia was determined to prove Dean right.

    So he doesn't really get the hoopla over setting many the Davenport University men's soccer records in just two seasons with the Panthers. The junior forward scored a school-record five goals in a 6-0 win over Indiana Tech on Oct. 12. And he did it all in the second half in a 29 minute span.
