    Deacons cruise past Davies in straight sets

    The Fargo Shanley volleyball team accompished on Friday what it failed to do a season ago: advance to the state championship match. After a comfortable three-set win over Mandan in the quarterfinals Thursday, the Deacons made it two straight sweeps Friday evening, disposing of Fargo Davies 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 in the Class A semifinals to book a place in today's title match against Century -the only team to defeat Shanley this season.

    Suffering three losses from its first six games of the season, the Minot High football team had initial trouble preventing big plays. Between defeats to Fargo Davies, Century and Bismarck, the Magicians gave up four passing touchdowns exceeding 47 yards.

    Joe Mellenbruch/MDN Minot senior running back Karter Gorney picked up Minot's first touchdown after a 46-yard scamper during the first quarter against Bismarck on Friday night. Gorney finished with 93 rushing yards in the Magicians' 22-7 Class AAA semifinal win.
