    King's beats Murphy to wrap up league title

    Like any good championship game, it came down to the fourth quarter. And in the fourth quarter Friday night, the King's Knights prevailed to wrap up the Cascade Conference football title with a 17-7 victory over Archbishop Murphy at Terry Ennis Stadium.

    Shorewood scored two goals in the first half on the way to a 3-0 win over the Oak Harbor High School soccer team Thursday, Oct. 23, at Shoreline Stadium. The Thunderbirds remained in a three-team scramble for second place in the Wesco 3A standings with the win.

    JJ Jerome rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns and Zach Zimmerman threw two touchdown passes to Shanden Mixayphone as Monroe clinched a playoff spot with a 28-16 victory over Mariner in a Wesco 4A football contest on Friday night.     Prep girls soccer: Archbishop Murphy 0, King's 0

    Cascade Conference rivals Archbishop Murphy and King's each played a fast-paced offensive attack on Wednesday night, but stellar goalkeeping kept both teams from scoring as the game finished in a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods. 'It was a counter-attacking war,' Murphy head coach Michael Bartley said.

    Though Everett is winless, the Seagulls have a sure-handed receiver, Hayden Sick, who caught a touchdown pass and a two-point conversion in his last game against Marysville-Pilchuck Oct. 10. He caught six passes and led the team with 100 all-purpose yards. The Arlington Eagles football team shut out Stanwood 28-0 to retain its fifth-consecutive Stilly Cup title Oct. 10. In the fourth quarter, running back Tristan Trotter rushed for a 14-yard touchdown, and Kalahar ran 15 yards for Arlington's final score.

    Prep football: Lake Stevens 52, Mariner 7

    The seniors at Lake Stevens High School celebrated homecoming Friday night with the customary Running with the Chicken at halftime. In the second half the Vikings football team took the tradition one step farther - by running away with the game.

    Had Lake Stevens and Mariner squared off three weeks ago, most probably would have predicted a blowout in favor of the Vikings. Mariner started the season 0-3, while Lake Stevens was 2-1, with its lone loss coming to a strong Marysville Pilchuck squad.

    With a 7-0 win over visiting Marysville-Pilchuck Monday, Oct. 13, the Oak Harbor High School tennis team is closing in on one of coach Horace Mells' preseason goals. Mells hoped his team would finish in the top three in the division, and Monday's victory assured the Wildcats would finish in no worse than a tie for third with Arlington.

    For Kyleigh Johnson, Ashley Turcott and Tiara Huffaker, all seniors on the Cascade volleyball team, victories didn't come easily in their first two years on varsity. This year has been a different - and much happier - story.
