    Larkin gets the drop on Barrington at Jacobs

    When a contested off-balance 3-pointer by Larkin senior guard Charles Sanders popped up into the air off the front rim, it appeared the Hinkle Holiday Classic championship game with Barrington was headed to a second overtime Saturday night in Algonquin. But when Sanders' shot at the buzzer dropped softly through the net, the Royals were headed onto the court for a wild celebration of a 69-66 overtime victory and a tournament title.

    Cary-Grove's Barker reaches 1,000 milestone

    Cary-Grove 44, Mundelein 27: Katie Barker became the eighth player in C-G girls basketball history to score 1,000 career points in the Trojans' win at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament. Barker led all scorers with 16 points.

    Boys basketball insider: East giving freshman a look

    What he did: Esp averaged 31 points a game in the Cadets' first two games at the Chuck Dayton Classic, including a 39-point bonanza on Monday in Marmion's win against Eisenhower. What the Saints did: East is living up to its top-seeded billing at the Chuck Dayton tournament, averaging more than 95 points in its first two wins of the tournament.

    Benet senior Emily Eshoo has earned Daily Herald girls basketball MVP honors for her recent performances, including a 25-point effort to help the Redwings earn a tournament triumph. Emily Eshoo, Benet: The senior scored 17 points in a 61-42 victory against Providence at the Naperville North/Benet Holiday Tournament.

    Boys basketball: Week 4 MVP

    St. Charles North senior guard Jake Ludwig has earned Daily Herald boys basketball MVP honors for his performances in a pair of recent victories. Jake Ludwig, St. Charles North: The 6-foot-1 senior guard scored 47 points in two Upstate Eight Conference River Division wins that sent the North Stars over .500.

    Larkin legs out win over Marian Central

    One of the decisions Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter pondered prior to the Royals' 85-73 win at the Hinkle Holiday Classic Tuesday was to figure out whether or not to allow Marian Central's dynamic guard Adam Pischke to go off in the scoring column and clamp down on every other Hurricane in the process. It turned out Carter's game plan was right on.

    Girls basketball: Fox Valley roundup Tuesday, Dec. 23

    Dundee-Crown 50, McHenry 47: Creighton Fed scored 20 points and the Chargers held on to win the third place game at the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic. Kayla Lawrence added 11 points for D-C and Jesania Laboy had 10. Guerin 52, Westminster Christian 32: Maddie Versluys had 17 points and 8 rebounds and Elise Van Noord added 7 points for Westminster at the Guerin tournament.

    Four was the most points in succession the Royals allowed in Monday night's second-round Hinkle Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament game at Jacobs. Scoring the first 10 put them on their way to a 64-33 victory in Algonquin.

    Spagnola steps up as St. Edward downs St. Viator

    Six 6-foot-3 Cece Rapp plays a huge role on both ends of the court for the Green Wave, but when the senior got into foul trouble early against visiting St. Viator it was up to the rest of her teammates to carry the load. They did just that, prevailing with a 43-30 nonconference win over the Lions in Elgin.

    Negron, Larkin topple Prairie Ridge

    There was a lesson learned after the Larkin boys basketball team dropped an Upstate River matchup to St. Charles North Friday night -- that sophomore Christian Negron has to be more of a focal point offensively by being aggressive and selfish. While the 6-foot-6 inch Negron carries an alternative approach, there was no doubt that Larkin benefits from that game plan after he poured in 18 points in Larkin's 58-48 win over Prairie Ridge to open pool play of the 2014 Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs in Algonquin Saturday.

    Callaghan's versatility leads St. Charles North over...

    With senior guard Jake Ludwig forced to the bench after picking up his fourth foul late in the third quarter, St. Charles North needed someone to take charge Friday night against Larkin. The North Stars turned to Jack Callaghan and the versatile senior veteran passed the test, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half during their 59-46 Upstate Eight Conference River Division triumph over Larkin in St. Charles.

    Prep roundup: North wrestling nipped by Larkin

    ELGIN – Kolbe O'Brien , Chris Ting and Conrad Noverini each earned falls Friday to help the St. Charles North wrestling team win eight of 10 contested bouts against Larkin. Trouble was, the North Stars also forfeited four matches, which ultimately accumulated in a 36-35 Upstate Eight Conference River Division defeat.
