    Girls basketball: Fox Valley roundup Wednesday, Nov. 26

    Cary-Grove 61, Lake Zurich 52: All-tournament selection Katie Barker had 24 points to lead the Trojans at the Lake Zurich tournament. Candace Cunningham, who was named to the second team all-tournament, added 10 points for C-G and Jennifer Pilut also had 10. St. Edward 59, River Ridge 42: Cece Rapp scored 21 points and Katelyn Castoro had 12 to lead the Green Wave to a win in their first game at the Dakota tournament.

    St. Edward shoots past Alden-Hebron

    St. Edward boys basketball coach P.J. White is often more vocal than the soft-spoken approach he took Wednesday night. White, who typically can shout with the best of them either on the court or the football field, joked after St. Edward's 80-54 thumping of Alden-Hebron in Pool A play of the 8th annual Westminster Christian Thanksgiving Classic in Elgin that he was "just saving his voice" for the rest of the season.

    Westminster Christian's depth comes through

    Westminster Christian boys basketball coach Bruce Firchau believes in a few of his team's luxuries this season and a main one besides depth is flexibility. So when senior Robbie Kleczynski drew his third foul with just 3:15 left in the first quarter of Tuesday night's 70-43 rout of neighbor Harvest Christian in Pool A play of the 8th annual Warrior Thanksgiving Classic in Elgin, Firchau's panic meter never wavered.

    Batavia girls basketball withstands scrappy Elgin ch...

    ELGIN –The Batavia girls basketball team held off a scrappy Elgin team to win its first Upstate Eight Conference River Division game of the season, 61-38, Tuesday night. The Bulldogs took control of the game in the second half but did not pull away until the fourth quarter, leading by only eight points, 35-27, at the start of the final quarter.

    St. Edward rolls over Harvest Christian

    To high school boys basketball players and coaches across the area, Nov. 24 was Opening Day, a date they had been eagerly anticipating since March. "Everyone wakes up and you think about it being your first game," St. Edward guard Gino Domel said.

    Bartlett 64, Downers Grove North 56: Ryan DiCanio scored 23 points and Jason Hasenberg added 18 to lead the Hawks to a win in their season opener at the Wheaton Academy tournament. Tyler Pauletti added 9 points for Bartlett.

    Elgin 49, Alden-Hebron 33: Abby Pierre-Louis had 13 points to lead the Maroons to a win in the third place game of the Elgin Academy tournament. Destiny West and Alisha Panthier each had 10 points for Elgin.

    Foul trouble, Harlem do in Larkin

    It was a case of too many fouls and not enough players on a depleted bench that contributed to a 58-46 loss to Harlem in second round action at the Burlington Central Thanksgiving Tournament. The game was tied 27-27 at halftime.

    Poor shooting fells Elgin

    If the Elgin High girls basketball team hopes to take strides forward this season coach Dr. Nick Bumbales knows his team will have to find a way to put the ball in the basket more consistently. It was something the Maroons struggled with on Thursday night in a 42-33 loss to Willows Academy in the semifinals of the Elgin Academy Thanksgiving Tournament.

    Girls basketball: Fox Valley roundup Thursday, Nov. 20

    Hampshire 33, Maine West 24: Emma Benoit scored 14 points to lead the Whip-Purs to a win at the Hoffman Estates tournament. Rockford East 57, Harvest Christian 45: Paulina Castro scored 17 points and Kylee Knox 13 but the Lions suffered their first loss of the season at their own tournament.

    Geneva junior Loudon Vollbrecht is one of five players on this year's Vikings roster who stands 6-foot-7 or taller. Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston has to go back two decades to his time at Northwestern University to recall being around a team with comparable size to this year's Vikings.

    Glenbard East upends Elgin

    There were some bright spots for the Elgin girls basketball team in the season opener at Chesbrough Field House on Tuesday night. However, in the end the Maroons couldn't overcome their 32 turnovers and fell to visiting Glenbard East 50-22.
