    Girls basketball: Fox Valley roundup Thursday, Jan. 29

    Bartlett's girls basketball team avoided an upset bid at East Aurora Thursday night and stayed tied with Neuqua Valley for the lead in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division race with a 39-34 win. Junior Kaitlin Brohan led the Hawks with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Lauren Janczak added 9 points to the win.

    Rapp, Scully power St. Edward past ACC

    Senior center Cece Rapp provided the inside presence for St. Edward with 25 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots while Ryann Scully poured in 5 shots from beyond the arc in scoring 16 points, all in the first half. The Green Wave's dynamic duo keyed a 61-39 win over ACC in Metro Suburban West girls basketball action in Elgin Thursday night.

    Geneva girls basketball cruises

    STREAMWOOD – The Geneva girls basketball team rebounded from its lone Upstate Eight Conference River Division loss on Thursday, rolling past Streamwood, 68-20. Geneva improved to 17-6 overall and 11-1 in conference play.

    Cary-Grove's Ruhland out with knee injury

    Best known as a Notre Dame football recruit who started at offensive tackle in two state championship games for Cary-Grove, Ruhland suffered a small tear in his meniscus while planting to set a screen during a 38-27 loss to Crystal Lake South last Friday. "It was the best-case scenario," Matt Ruhland said.

    Boys basketball: Week 8 MVP

    Alonzo Verge Jr., Willowbrook: The 6-foot-3 sophomore guard exploded for 115 points in four games as the Warriors extended their winning streak to eight straight. Verge broke program records with 45 points and eight 3-pointers against Montini, and then scored 35 points and hit a game-winning 3-pointer to beat Proviso East.

    Cary-Grove 51, McHenry 45: The Trojans bounced back from a 3-game skid with a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division road win. Senior Jason Gregoire led the way with 13 points while Cary-Grove as a team sank 20 of 29 from the free throw line.

    Night of Hoops highlights busy basketball weekend

    At the cost of about a dollar an hour -- less if you include sophomore games -- the 22nd annual Jim & Sylvia Roberts Night of Hoops draws four varsity basketball games to Batavia High School. "It's a great day of basketball all day long," said Bulldogs coach Jim Nazos, who hosts longtime Night of Hoops attendee West Aurora in the scheduled 8 p.m. nightcap.

    Girls basketball: Fox Valley roundup Tuesday, Jan. 27

    Elgin 63, Cornerstone Christian 35: Scoring over 60 points for the first time this season, the Maroons snapped a 2-game losing streak in a nonconference win on the road. Alisha Panthier scored a team-high 12 points with Tiana Stewart adding 9 and Lakiya Harvey netting 8. Elgin had 13 players score at least 1 point in the win.

    Bartlett runs away with South Elgin

    Coming off a big win over Neuqua Valley on Saturday to pull even in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division race, the Bartlett girls basketball team made sure to keep that momentum going when rival South Elgin visited on Tuesday night. Behind a stifling defensive effort that forced 21 Storm turnovers in the game and a hot night from behind the arc that included nine 3-pointers, the Hawks ran away with a 56-28 victory.

    Geneva reserves close the deal against Elgin boys ba...

    Ralston's faith ultimately was rewarded, although not without a few nervous moments as Geneva took Tuesday's Upstate Eight Conference River matchup, 72-53. The Vikings led big, 57-34, entering the fourth quarter, but the Maroons made major headway during the fourth quarter, closing within 62-52 at the 2:51 mark.
