The Salem boys basketball team wrapped up its Northeastern Buckeye Conference season Friday against Canton South, and it was far from an easy experience. Right out of the gate, Canton South scored 42 points in the first half and the Quakers were turned back by the Wildcats, who celebrated their senior night with a 69-35 win at Charles "Red" Ash Gymnasium. After the pairings were made at the Canton Division II sectional-district tournament in the Canton Field House early Sunday afternoon, Marlington and Alliance opted to play in the opening round, instead of waiting. The Dukes , who were seeded sixth, will host the Triway Titans , the 2005 and 2006 state runner-up and this year's 10th-seeded team, in a sectional semifinal Tuesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Marlington placed itself in the upper bracket, which also includes top-seeded and undefeated Akron St. Vincent-St. Comment?

Springfield, closing in on an unbeaten regular season, is looking to continue its winning ways at the upcoming Salem Division III sectional-district tournament. The 19-0 Tigers received the top seed at Sunday's draw and will host the winner of Southern Local and Jackson-Milton at 7 p.m. March 6. Springfield - ranked 11th in the Division III state poll - has beaten its opponents by an average margin on 24.4 points per game this season and has won 29 straight regular-season games. Comment?

The Canton South Wildcats jumped out on visiting Marlington early and cruised to an 84-56 Northeastern Buckeye Conference boys basketball victory Friday evening at Canton South High School. "We couldn't get anything to go our way, and they just knocked down shot after shot and played an outstanding game," noted Marlington head coach Nick Evanich. Comment?
