    Wildcats Kent Knowles and Wright Patterson attempt to block Johnson's Ty Cockfield during Monday night's home loss. The Johnson High School Knights brought an undefeated record into Apalachee Monday night, and they would leave with the same after defeating the Wildcats 70-63.

    All-Region football team features locals

    The Region 8-AAAAA All-Region team was announced late last week with Barrow County featuring rather heavily in the top honors. Winder-Barrow running back CeCe Green, in addition to being selected as a first-team running back, was named Player of the Year for Region 8-AAAAA.

    Gladiators' Cloy out as head football coach

    After going 1-19 the last two seasons, the Johns Creek Gladiators will have a new head football coach in 2015. Mike Cloy, who started the school's football program in 2009 and guided the Gladiators to a 17-3 regular season record and back-to-back state playoff berths in 2011 and '12, lost his job after back-to-back seasons of 0-10 and 1-9.

    The numbers alone boggle the mind: -- 11: Total state championships for Buford football -- 7: State championships in the last eight seasons -- 4: State championships won in different classifications -- 3: Three separate streaks of winning three straight state titles Take that in for a moment -- and then pick your jaw up off the floor. No the Wolves are not the winningest program in the GHSA -- Valdosta still has 24 state titles and Lincoln County 14 -- but there has not been a better football program in this state since the start of the millennium.

    Colquitt edges Archer in Class AAAAAA

    Chase Parrish threw three touchdown passes and unbeaten Colquitt County won the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA football title with 28-24 victory over Archer on Saturday night at the Georgia Dome.

    Area boys lineups look to bounce back after losses

    Newnan will try and snap a two-game losing streak when it hits the road tonight against a highf lying Falcons team that returns the bulk of last year's lineup that reached the GHSA Final Four. Pebblebrook comes into the game with a 75-70 win over Langston Hughes, a team Newnan lost to 48-41 earlier this year.

    Eagles seek successful season after strong start

    Things are looking good so far for Atlanta International's girls' basketball team. AIS has gotten off on the right foot at the beginning of the 2014-15 season with a 4-1 overall record and 1-0 mark in Region 5A as of last Friday.

    Female Athlete of the Week-Nieja Crawford

    Nieja Crawford has steadily developed herself as a player to watch on the state girls' high school basketball level during her first two seasons at Atlanta International. The 5-foot-10 junior point guard has taken her game to even higher level this season, averaging 33 points and 14 rebounds per contest to lead AIS to four wins in its first five games.

    Special / Perry McIntyre / Lovett defenders Alex Sayles and Alec White bring down a Bremen running back during the Lions' 56-21 first-round Class AA state playoff win Nov. 14. Westminster, St. Pius X and Woodward are one step away from a possible trip to the Georgia Dome for the state finals after advancing to the semifinals Friday. Westminster advanced to the Class AAA semifinals with a 14-0 victory over Hart County in a quarterfinal game - its first final four berth since 1996.
