    Block, Kennedy named 2014 Cross Country Runners of t...

    The cross country performances that East Jackson's Chase Kennedy and Athens Academy's Anna Maria Block turned in this fall were nothing short of remarkable, but what makes those performances even more amazing was that they came from relatively unseasoned underclassmen. A year ago, Kennedy, a freshman, finished 26th at the Class AAA Championships in a time of 17 minutes, 41 seconds.

    Clarke Central girls win at Classic City Shootout

    At the Classic City Shootout at Cedar Shoals High, Clarke Central girls defeated Newton 54-51, getting 10 points apiece from Kiara Huff and Tyra Thompson. The Gladiators take a break for Christmas and return to the court Dec. 26 against Morgan County at Georgia College and State.

    Lady Glads bring their best

    Winder-Barrow's girls' basketball team jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead Friday night at the Dogghouse, the Harrison Activities Building, forcing visiting Clarke Central to call a time out. But the Lady Gladiators righted the ship with a 14-2 run over most of the rest of the opening quarter and went on to take a 58-36 victory in a Region 8-AAAAA crossover game.

    Doggs keep it close with Glads, lose it late

    Winder-Barrow's boys' basketball team led for nearly all of the first quarter and for about two minutes in the second period Friday at the Dogghouse, the Harrison Activities Building, but Clarke Central maintained a fairly comfortable lead in the second half and came away with a 63-51 victory in a Region 8-AAAAA crossover game. Coach Ron Garren's Bulldoggs cut the margin to three points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, once at 48-45 on Jay Griggs' 3-point basket and again at 53-50 on Casey Thurmond's layup, but the Gladiators finished the game on a 10-1 run to win comfortably.

    Monsignor Donovan boys earn first win of season

    At Monsignor Donovan, freshman Kobe Haley scored a game-high 24 points Friday as the Rams defeated Bethlehem Christian 84-43 in the first round of the Chick-fil-A Ram Classic Christmas Tournament, earning their first victory of the season. ATHENS CHRISTIAN 79, HILLCREST 60: At the Chick-fil-A Classic in Columbia, S.C., the Eagles had four players score in double figures as they defeated Hillcrest, South Carolina's Class AAAA state runners-up from a year ago.

    Scott Wilkins knew his team for the Fellowship of Christian Athlete's All-Star Game was starting to click when the joking began. "That's when you know when good things are happening is when they kind of get on one another and the facades come down, the walls of 'I'm not going to let you in' kind of go away," Wilkins said.

    Stoudenmires wrestle cancer

    Jim Stoudenmire, who died from a brain tumor in 2000, has a legacy as being one of the most loved and respected coaches in north Georgia, and nobody upholds that legacy better than his three sons who are still coaching in the area to this day. Jim's sons are all currently high school wrestling coaches in the area with Jim Stoudenmire II coaching at Winder-Barrow, Ken Stoudenmire coaching at East Hall and Tim Stoudenmire coaching at Clarke Central.

    The altercation in the stands during Saturday's basketball game between Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals high schools that halted play for almost 10 minutes is rare in the crosstown rivalry, athletic directors from both schools said Monday. Their comments were echoed by Clarke County School District Police Chief Fabian Jones, who said Monday that "for the most part, most of our games don't have issues."
