    Doggs make quick work of Cedar Shoals

    Courtesy runner Daniel Buice scored from third base on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday at the Charles W. Maddox Baseball/Softball Complex to end the Winder-Barrow baseball team's 10-0 victory over Cedar Shoals in a Region 8-AAAAA game. The Doggs defeated the Jaguars 15-3 on Thursday in Athens behind Cole Baggett's grand-slam home run in another region game.

    After the graduation of former starting pitcher Patrick Matthews, the Clarke Central baseball squad wasn't sure how it would replace its workhorse ace. The spot left in the Gladiators' rotation was one of the biggest holes they had to fill this season, especially if they were going to be more competitive than in their two previous seasons.

Athens Academy finished second with 123 points followed by Hebron Christian and Tallulah Falls .

    After officially clinching its 29th consecutive region title Wednesday, Athens Academy's boys tennis team celebrated on one of the courts at the Athens Tennis Center. They huddled together, chanting the number after taking a 3-2 victory over Lakeview in the Area 2-A tournament.

    Arteaga scored all four goals for the Gladiators in a win over Lanier Tuesday and added four more in a route of Greene County Thursday. Calvin Koslowsky, Westminster Christian - Koslowsky scored six goals in a win over Heritage Christian Monday and had a hat trick and an assist in a victory against Friendship Christian Thursday.

    Area golf began with the Area 2 tournament on Monday and will continue throughout the week. Oconee County has already sealed a state tournament spot with a win in the region tournament last week.

    The Clarke Central Lady Gladiators soccer team had lost four straight games and were without goalkeeper and captain Hannah Welch going into a matchup with region leader Gainesville High in late March. When the clock hit zero, they had lost 10-1, making the path to the playoffs harder.

    Wildcats finish third in tennis

    The Apalachee Wildcats had already wrapped up a spot in the state tournament with their win over Lanier earlier in the week, but there was still a little bit more work to do. Apalachee claimed the number three spot out of Region 8-AAAAA with their win over Clarke Central on Thursday after losing to Flowery Branch earlier in the day during the semifinals.
