    The first week of the state tournament has come and gone, as what were full brackets on Monday have now been cut down to the final four in each public bracket , setting things up for when the tournament resumes on the holiday on Tuesday, May 26 with the public sectional semifinals, which will be followed with the sectional finals on Friday, May 29. Williamstown can win it all : The Braves have been one of the state's best stories this spring, putting together a sensational campaign under first-year coach Joe Smith that has included 18 wins, a trip to the second weekend of the Diamond Classic and now, a trip to Tuesday's Central Jersey, Group 4 semifinals against Toms River North .

    Highlights from N.J. Sec. 2 Groups 3-4: Betha, Glase...

    Eric Bethea of Piscataway, Eve Glasergreen of North Hunterdon, and the Westfield girls 4x800 team all took down records and several athletes turned in sparkling double and big personal bests when the NJSIAA North Jersey, Sec. 2 Groups 3-4 Championships opened on Friday in very windy conditions at Ridge High School. The Indiana-bound Bethea put on a remarkable show in the boys Group 4 triple.

    Jason Knapp has quite an unusual stat line as a professional baseball player. Drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft eight years ago, he has pitched during only four seasons.

    H.S. Golf: Vikings' balanced foursome tops Newton

    The Vernon golf team used a balanced lineup - with all four golfers shooting in the 40s - to top Newton on Wednesday at Newton Country Club's par-35 course. The Vikings were led by Shawn Weigel, who shot an 8-over-par 43. Jack Driscoll added a 47, Hugh Gardner chipped in a 48 and Charlie Gardner carded a 49 for the Vikings, who improved to 14-11 on the year.

    Izzy Hilling tossed six innings and gave up one earned run on three hits, while striking out three to lead the fourth-seeded Pope John softball team to a 11-2 win over No. 5 seed St. Dominic in the quarterfinals of the North, Non-Public A Tournament Tuesday at Pope John High School.

    H.S. Softball: Sparta edges West Milford on Mastrian...

    Mary Mastriani pitched a one-hitter, leading the eighth-seeded Sparta softball team to a 2-1 victory over ninth-seeded West Milford in the first round of North 1, Group 3 tournament play on Friday at Sparta High School. Mastriani's day included eight strikeouts and just two walks across the full seven innings of work.

    PJ, Lenape Valley's HWS baseball and softball finals...

    The Pope John baseball team and Lenape Valley softball team both wanted to make history for Sussex County on Saturday night. The Lions were looking to become the first Sussex County team to win the Hunterdon Warren Sussex Tournament championship twice by beating North Hunterdon in the sixth annual tournament's final at Diamond Nation.

    Pope John poised and ready for HWS Baseball final

    It was just four years ago that the Lions managed to become Sussex County's first tri-county champion by beating Hunterdon Central, 8-1. Since then, the Lions haven't felt that great feeling after being bounced from the tournament before the title game in each of the last three seasons.

    The Patriots, who prior to this year had never ventured further than the tournament quarterfinals, have knocked off three HWS opponents this spring, and will play their fourth, Hunterdon Central, for the championship on Saturday night at the Diamond Nation Complex in Flemington. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Lenape Valley is the sixth straight Sussex County team to reach the HWS title game, following Newton , Sparta , High Point , Pope John and High Point .
