Spreads Battle Butter With Better Health
Remember when butter wasn't evil? If you're younger than 30, you probably don't. In the last 30 years, butter's fat and cholesterol have gotten it banished largely to the world of bakers and those few hardy ...

What about the butter or butter spread that you buy from the Amish Markets, are they better than the spreads that you buy from the stores?

This is SUCH a load of crap. And if you are going to eat it, make sure it's organic. Everything else listed in this article is FULL of chemicals and crap that actually RAISES cholesterol levels. It's all about balance, people. We need fat in our diets, especially saturated fats. Yes, you heard me right. You NEED these type of fats. Olive oil is a wonderful oil, but when heated at a high temp, it changes the molecules of the oil, turning it into a bad fat (like a trans fat). The only fats you should be cooking with are coconut oil and butter. I am living proof because I had horrible cholesterol levels, until I purchased the book by Dr. Schwartzbein called "The Schwartzbein Principle". My cholesterol dropped from 260 to under 200 in 3 months time. Carbs are limited, but not eliminated. And you have to eat a certain amount of carbs, fat and protein with each meal/snack. I also went from 260lbs. to 150 lbs.(I'm tall - 5'9"). And I exercise 6 days a week (kickboxing, lifting weights, jogging, step aerobics).

A lot of foods are "fortified" due to issues with refridgerition in trucks enroute to retailers from wholesalers. My wife and I were talking at the breakfast table about nutrients good for brain tissue. Learning and memory governed by the acteycholine are important in schoolwork. Children and elderly need the essential elements. In the case of Alzheimer's, a simple blood test to identify people at risk for Alzheimer's disease may be close at hand, according to researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. They found that blood plasma levels of a peptide called Amyloid Beta (AB42) appear to increase before the onset of Alzheimer's and decrease shortly after a person develops the disease, which may be because AB42 becomes trapped in the brain. "To date, AB42 levels have measured most reliably in the cerebrospinal fluid, which is more difficult to collect than blood. Blood draws can be done with relative ease and greater frequency than spinal taps, which is typically the way cerebrospinal fluid is collected," study lead author Nicole Schupf, associate professor of clinical epidemiology, said in a Columbia news release. The study was published online Sept. 8 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The finding is similar to that seen in heart attack patients, who typically have elevated lipid levels in their bloodstream before a heart attack but lower post-heart attack lipid levels, said study senior author Dr. Richard Mayeux. He is professor of neurology, psychiatry and epidemiology, and co-director of the Taub Institute of Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University Medical Center. Currently, Alzheimer's-related cognitive impairments can be monitored throughout the course of the disease, but there's no reliable method of tracking the pathologic progression of Alzheimer's. The ability to reliably measure AB42 levels in the blood could enable doctors to predict the onset of Alzheimer's much earlier, which may help in efforts to fight the disease, according to the researchers. The U.S. National Institute on Aging outlines the stages and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. In our family, we have always been good in school and at work, so the disease would be surprising. This morning, I said to my wife that I was surprised to learn that Ronald Reagan got the disease because he was so intelligent and he was a good president albeit a republican. His brother said that he had a "photographic memory" and that in college "he can assimilate detail quite well" and he did in order to be a good president, actor, governor of California and a stock broker.

Baloney. Julia Childs lived to a ripe old age, and she ate lots of butter lots of times. She never used any of these substitutes. I note no reference to whether they contain polyunsaturated oils. Might matter, no?
