It probably has something to do with the fact that the event got a lot less interesting when we started sending our pros and dominating the sport.

Don't get me wrong. I get why that happened. Everyone else was sending their equivalent of professionals to represent their country, and we were kind of lagging. But I still feel like the Olympics should be for amateurs, and those bad boys that kicked Tunisia's ass yesterday are very VERY far from amateurs.

Well, if the NBA and FIBA get their way, we may soon see Olympic basketball look more amateur, as they're pushing for Olympic basketball to be 23 and under (so, technically, there will remain pros playing, but not the elite pros).

Personally, I like it just the way it is; yes, its true that at the end of the day, the US is the best of the best, but due to the fact that the NBA is now 20%+ comprised of foreign players, foreign nations are much more competitive.

Going back to '92 (when the original Dream Team thrashed everyone by an average of 40+ points), no one could ever beat them, even on their worst days. However, today, teams like Spain, Argentina, and Brazil (and possibly France on a good day for them) have enough NBA talent/firepower to win at least 1 or 2 games in a 7 game series against the US.

That's not the right answer either. Such a solution rewards the physically precocious, who spring from high school as fully developed players, and punishes those who take a little longer to hit their stride.

I had the pleasure of having a conversation with Charles Barkley about his Dream Team experience. He was in a sports bar in the Arizona Center, just kicking back and having a beer. This would be right after he was traded to the Suns. I don't normally bother celebrities, but I wanted to welcome him to town.

So I took the little "table tent" that was advertising the food and drink specials, and a pen, and politely asked him for an autograph, after telling him that I was a Suns season ticket holder and very excited to have him on the team. To my utter astonishment, he asked if I and my friends would like to sit down and join him. Of course we accepted, and that led me to asking the dopiest question I have ever asked in my life.

"What was it like, being so dominant at the Olympics?"

He laughed, and replied, "What do you think it was like? it was F***ING AWESOME!"

I felt really stupid for days afterwards.

I agree with only non-professional athletes completing in the Olympics...Boxers cannot do it, so others should not be able to.

The Pomp of the Nations Shall Cease, and the Achievements of the People Shall Collapse in Upon Them, in the Day I Open the Mouth of Sheol to Receive Them
__________
7/27/12 From The Lord, Our God and Savior - The Lord’s Words Spoken to Timothy During an Online Fellowship, For All Those Who Have Ears to Hear

This question was asked: What does The Lord think about the Olympics, and professional sports in general?

[The Lord answered] It is an abhorrence to Me! Says The Lord. For the athletes who proclaim My name, and give Me thanks, do always offend; for they have surely taken the name of The Lord in vain. For what part do I have in their achievements? What part do I have in their vanity? In their sin?
And look upon these monstrosities, which man has built! Look at all these foundations they lay down, while forsaking the poor! Look upon the vanity and pomp of all these deceitful nations, and tell Me, what do you see?!... They enlarge themselves while the needy are made to live in obscurity! They mask themselves to hide their vulgarity! Behold they flaunt freedom, yet oppress their own people from birth to the grave! Not one of them does good! NOT ONE! All have gone the way of Sodom, every one of them has followed in the way of Cain! And all, from the least to the greatest, have polluted My name! Thus My hand is removed from ALL nations! And when they gather themselves together, and great calamity befalls them, I will not listen to their pleas! Says The Lord.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Aries

You're idealistic and impressionable today, and want to see the best in everyone. Look straight past their faults, pretending they aren't there; concentrate on their good points instead. If a new relationship gets off the ground now it will always be characterized by an aura of romance and fantasy, and a slightly otherworldly quality.
