Different times, different attitudes.

What's the difference between a family showing up at Ellis Island in 1952 with nothing but the clothes on their backs and a steamer chest ... and a Mexican running across the border with a backpack and nothing but the clothes on their backs?

The difference is the times. People were escaping the Nazi's, Communism, war, etc. between 1917 and 1955. Now people are just running to the US because they know it's the best shot they have for their kids to make a life for themselves.

Why I think there is plenty of money to do this in the existing system is a new topic altogether. I just can't look another parent in the eye and say "Sorry. My grandparents were poor and uneducated immigrants. They helped send me to college ... back then, but this is now and I support the notion that you shouldn't be sending your children to get an education in this school district because you didn't pay taxes."

Figure how much you pay for school taxes, then how many years you will be paying.

I agree with you stapler guy. The issue to me here is "children". Human rights will always be Americas silver lining. We should be taking care of our own, but that is no reason to turn away children of our neighbors, who will in time become productive, tax paying citizens. They do not all want to come here for a free ride, then just go back to Mexico. Mexico sucks thanks to drug cartels, that's why many are leaving. I know MANY illegals who do pay taxes, always have insurance, and do not get government assistance. I don't know how employers do it, but they do. Why are we too high and mighty to learn a new language? Children who speak 2 or more languages have great advantages. And believe it or not MANY of them do speak english, they just don't want to talk to snobby white people. I know baby boomers have the majority vote in this country right now, but things are changing. 20-30 years from now they will all be gone and hopefully we will see a more compassionate generation of people who are now growing up during these high-pressure times. Our country is not being "taken over". Even Benjamin Franklin worried about such a thing in 1751 when he was seeing more and more foreigners in the young colonies. Please refer to myimmigrationstory.com for his full statement on the matter concerning peoples of different complexions and nationalities. Our blending of races and cultures has made this country great. It has been resisted by certain kinds of people all along the way, but progress will be made. When we as a species can evolve away from the need for war and conquest, the leaps and bounds of success and progress will be unimaginable!

This is ridiculous and should be a no-brainer! For starters, fundamental rights protected by the US government are for US citizens! DUH! You cannot expect that because someone illegally enters the country that they are automatically going to receive the same rights and privileges as Americans. That mindset is unrealistic. Next, my taxes pay for services meant for Americans, not foreigners. I gladly pay my taxes for that reason! However, it bugs the hell out of me to see the illegals receiving all the benefits, schooling, healthcare etc...while average Americans such as myself, struggle to make ends meet. I'm not saying they have it easy, but they are getting a free ride at my expense. I think a lot of our economics woes have been building up for years because the illegal expenses we have been paying for are now catching up to us. And don't give me that "cheap labor, they help our economy" crap. That's just an excuse because Americans are too damn lazy to get their hands dirty doing real work. If they come into this country legally, then I have no issue with them being here. There is a system in place for a reason...use it! The first and foremost obligation of a country is to protect its citizens by monitoring its borders. Our country hasn't done that for years, but it needs to start now!

Well it seems obvious that you are an idiot! Illegal immigration has absolutely nothing to do with people coming across the border(s) to shop, tour, enjoy life in a foreign country for awhile....then go home when they are done! Are you that stupid to equate illegal immigration to Canadians shopping in the US? If that is your best argument then you better go to a different forum...you'll never survive Topix.

I think the mexicans were here 200 years before Americans , I think it's a benefit if people come to our country , I think that people should be able to travel freely an live throughout Mexico USA canada what's the big deal . I also think to not like someone because they come from a different country or have a different culture is a mental health issue . To say they don't pay taxes what about sales tax we all pay that ??????

My God you are missing the point! I could care less if people come here to shop, visit, whatever....but when the people stay here illegally, we end up paying for their services. Many of the illegals do not pay for their own healthcare, SSI, or retirements....so who does? We do!!! Many of these people (not all) end up getting social security, welfare, and free medical coverage that working Americans have to pay for....likewise, our costs keep going up. The more people using the services and the less people paying for those services equals higher expenses for those that do pay....simple economics. Another problem is that people seem to think that these illegals should have every right that Americans have....which is wrong. The US has laws in place and rights for its citizens....not for everybody in the world. By the way, just because I do not subscribe to illegal immigration does not mean I do not like these people. I just feel that illegal is illegal. They want to come here....fine...but do it legally. And for you to hint that I have a mental health issue just shows how small-minded you are sir....so go phuck yourself on that point.

Any child living in America should receive basic education. The child did not break the law!
