I am aware that we are in a situation in which we need more and more oil everyday, but there will be a time when we run out, and that time is, unfortunately, rapidly approaching. Analysts have for quite a while now determined that we are at a time of peak oil and that the amount that's left will only dwindle with time. Places such as the tar sands have a lot of oil, BUT extraction takes much more energy than we would ever get out of actually extracting it. That's definitely not worth drilling for. It's about time we started concentrating on newer energy sources, though it is very true that we will not find or develop one overnight. That's why it's vital to start now to hope for a less oil-dependent future.
