Nobody is willing to take responsibility for their own actions anymore, they think the government should do it for them. To protest "the wealthy" is asinine. Protest your elected officials and things might be different, it might actually have an impact.

Is that really true anymore? Our society has become so near fascism that the top 1% OWNS the government.

The problem begins with those who believe nothing can be done. Everything has to have a beginning, a starting point. That starting point has to begin at a local level not at a national level. I agree that it is becoming a facist state but not in the way I assume you are meaning. But it has to start at your own house, in your own neighborhood, in your own town.

My understanding of fascism is this:
"A governmental system with strong centralized power, permitting no opposition or criticism, controlling all affairs of the nation (industrial, commercial, etc.)" (American College Dictionary, New York: Random House, 1957).

It very much represents what is happening in our government. Mandating health coverage through the Commerce Act, Suing states who try to inact laws against illegal immigrants, warrantless wiretapping, just for starters. Most people pick and choose between liberal and conservative, I say both are corrupt.

Any sane person would identify with this movement. The 1% exists, they have bought the politicians, they are making the laws and taking advantage of the American people.

And to think that this is what the veterans of this country really fought for instead of the freedom that they thought that they were fighting for.

SHAME ON YOU PROPAGANDIST

Break down of the Occupy Wall Street people.

Traffic on the Occupy Wall Street site averaged about 400,000 visitors a day during the sample week (October 7th), which represents more than 10% of the population. 1619 people completed the survey.

Age

Not surprising, nearly 2/3 of the protesters are under 35. But one in three is over 35 and one in five is over 45.

Racial/Ethnic background

81.3% of respondents considered themselves White, 1.3% Black\African American, 3.2% Asian,.4% Native American Indian, 2.9% Mixed, 7.7% Hispanic, and 3.2% considered themselves some other group.

Education

Only 7.9% of respondents lack at least some college.

27.4% have some college (but no degree), 35% have a college degree, 8.2% have some graduate school (but no degree), and close to 21.5% have a graduate school degree.

Employment Status

70% of respondents had jobs. 50.4% worked full time. 20.4% worked part time.

Only 13.1% are unemployed.

Income

47.5% of the sample earns less than $24,999 dollars a year and another quarter (24%) earn between $25,000 and $49,999 per year.

71.5% of the sample earns less than $50,000 per year.

15.4% of the sample earned between $50,000 and $74,999.

The remainder 13% of the sample earn over $75,000 with close to 2% earning over $150,000 per year.

Politics

27.3% of respondents considered themselves Democrats, another 2.4% said they were Republican.

Interestingly, a very large proportion of the sample, close to 70.3%, considered themselves Independents.

Cordero-Guzman concluded that the 99% looked like the 99%.

The one way they did significantly differ was in gender. 67% were male. 30.9% were female and 2% preferred another gender designation.

92.5% of the respondents either strongly or somewhat agree with the protests. Over 91.8% believe the movement is likely to grow.

Hey, I was just paraphrasing a leader (Mary E. Lease) that helped run the Populist movement around 1890. This movement was in retaliation to the Gilded Era, which was an era of a huge gap between the richest 2% and the other 98%. When the Populist movement was attacked as socialistic, she said,

"You may call me an anarchist, a socialist, or a communist. I care not, but I hold to the theory that if a man has not enough to eat three times a day and another 25,000,000, that last man has something that belongs to the first."

If the Populist movement wasn't a past embodiment of the 99% movement, even fighting the same issue, I don't know what is.

Sanity indeed, 1%'ers, and social stupidity does prevail!
While asleep at the Orwellian switch, all the "Occupy Wall Street" so-called protesters taking a dump in front of "mom and pop" businesses pretending to stand for something. Something being "against Wall Street"? Where were you when the government bailed them out, when it would have counted? Where do you stand on "Fast and Furious" being responsible for the death of a Border Patrol agent? Where is the protests of Penn States pedophillia scanda? Where were you when the wars started, or when they finished?
No, it's a lot safer to occupy a public park, piss off the local businesses by taking a shit in their front door. They aren't even on the stock market dumbasses, but you oppress them...(mighty "white" of you by the way)
Blame shifters! Same as the politicians, same as the liberals, same as the conservatives, same as the Europeans occupying America, or the Spaninards occuping Mexico.
The same worthless trash talk from so-called activists who do absolutely nothing for the betterment of mankind, while the real problems go without a single protest, without a single complaint.
Occupy Wall Street? You reap what you sow.... clueless sheep!

I got those at occupywallst.org

It's just a small sample. But there is a huge variety of people all across America right now that are feed up with the ways things are going for us all.

The people of America needs to know whats going on. I'm a regular dude, and I know plenty of people involved that are 40 hours a week that come down on the weekends, teachers, professors, students, radio people, small business owners downtown, all kinds of people.

Its a quote, which a cited in another post. I think the idea of this is that if there is a system in which such a gap is possible, then its unfair.

"when one man cannot feed himself and his family, lives in rags, and is ignored by the public eye;
I would ask what this man did to improve his lifestyle? Has he tried to be more or is he complacent with who he is? Is he willing to struggle to obtain more or has he decided that this is his place in life? Has he squandered his opportunities though willfull self-gratification, drugs or alcohol? Why has this man failed to achieve? Is his religion or beliefs stopping him from going forward?
Opportunity and success has its limitations, a willingness is required.

while another man has 25,000,000, the second man has something that belongs to the first."
This in itself is a purely socialist statement, nothing more. We have no idea what the second man did to gain his fortune. If he had dug into a mountain for 25 years and finally found a vein of gold that he painstakingly removed through the sweat of his brow, you would relieve him of what he had worked very hard for that very long time, sacrificing his time and effort, only to give it to the other man who willingly squandered his opportunities?

Someone said "Any sane person would identify with this movement". Sane is being rational. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who truly believes it is rational to work hard and sacrifice for your fortune only to be forced to give it away to someone who didn't. At best the second man might give the first a job or an oppurtunity to improve himself, to make his own fortune, to make his own way. This would insure that the first man do his part and not become a burden to society.

What if the second man got that 25,000,000 willed down to him? How does that rightfully belong to the first man?

Look up the Populist Movement, and look up the Gilded Era. Then you will understand. I won't answer these what if questions that could be answered by some simple personal education.

I am fully aware and educated to the Populist Movement and the Gilded Age, as I do understand the generalization being used. However, those weren't literal questions to be answered by you, it was more of an example of rational thought. This will never be a socialist country unless it falls first at which time none of these generations will reap the benifits of what they are attempting to accomplish. A New World Order would emerge and it would only get worse. There are ways to accomplish the task at hand but it requires true leadership and insight beyond mob mentality.

The lack of true leadership and a clear and concise message is the downfall of the movement. Too many OWS protesters have no clue why they are there other than to protest something, to be part of something. There-in lies the problem, a movement of "the populus" where nothing is defined clearly, it leaves the door open to disaster.
