WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama called on Congress to stop taxpayer-funded subsidies for oil companies, and the Senate promptly ignored him Thursday.

Senators voted 51 to 47 to end debate on a bill that would do what Obama asked, thus failing to reach the 60 votes needed to end a filibuster.

The rebuff came just an hour after the president took to the Rose Garden to make his appeal, arguing that with oil prices hovering at around $100 a barrel and oil companies netting billions of dollars each financial quarter, there's little reason to give taxpayer-funded aid to the U.S. petroleum industry.

"On top of these record profits, oil companies are also getting billions a year in taxpayer subsidies," Obama said. "Think about that. It's like hitting the American people twice. You're already paying a premium at the pump right now. And on top of that, Congress thinks it's a good idea to send billions more of your tax dollars to the oil industry?"

It was mostly Republicans who thought that way, although four Democrats -- Sens. Mary Landrieu (La.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Jim Webb (Va.) and Mark Begich (Alaska)-- joined with the GOP. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, the two Maine Republicans, voted with the majority of Democrats.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) argued that it wasn't a matter of helping oil companies, but of not raising taxes on them, which he said would lead them to raise gas prices.

Which only makes the Oil Corps Richer and comsumers poorer.Mitch is a 1% Person who could care less about the 99%.

"Is this the best we have to offer folks who are staring at $4-a-gallon gasoline? A bill that even Democrats admit won't do anything to lower the price of gas?" McConnell said just before the vote.

And delivered nothing he promised. I doubt he can come up with enough free stuff to fool the entelligent people. This is a old saying...... you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all people all the time.

what would be required if there were a ruling by a court, for example, that gay persons have a right to marry, would be that government officials would issue marriage licenses, and judges would officiate at such marriages. and the rights of married persons under the law would be guaranteed to such marriage partners, the same as to heterosexual marriage partners.
do not get so alarmed. some of us who support gay rights are also very strongly for freedom of religion and separation of church and state. there are not enough gay persons to elect legislators who would support legalizing gay marriages - and the non-gay supporters would support it for civil libertarian reasons. most of us are civil libertarians on several issues, not just one.
your church would not have to perform marriages for gay couples.

I don't understand why people worry about that. No gay person would want their ceremony in a church that hated them nor would they want anyone involved in their ceremony that didn't support it. Geez people think about it.

If it had been left up to ballot initiatives the civil rights movement would have never happened. When you have the majority voting against the minority the majority will always win! That does not make it right.

Attacking people for being gay is ignorant. They will not change just because you don't like it. They will not change just because I don't like it. Why aren't there millions of posts on here attacking everyone for all other sins? I agree that marriage should stay between a man and a woman, however, I also think that civil unions should include the same benefit as traditional marriage. How would that hurt anyone here? Just get over it!

I have a choice to believe the way I want to, so do you, when it comes to changing the law for the gays and lesibans, that is carring it way to far. Marriage is between a man and woman. God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.
